Delicious Dreams! - Castles in the Air! - Glorious Prospects!
date:
April 10, 1808
description:
The five chief members of the British Cabinet sleeping around a small round table with a punch-bowl, bottles, and glasses. Portland sits above the others in a Gothic chair with a crutch beside him, one gouty bandaged hand supported by his Garter ribbon. Hawkesbury leans against him. Perceval, in his Chancellor of the Exchequer's gown, leans on the table. Castlereagh and Canning face each other leaning back in their chairs. A long scroll falls out of Castlereagh's pocket. One the back of his chair is a squalling cat with a piece of music. Manning's legs are stretched out on the back of Melville, who lies face downwards under the table clutching a bottle. Above their heads is a cloud representing their dream of Britannia riding in a triumphal car shaped like a boat with the British Lion as a figure head while holding a trident and an olive branch. Behind the car walks Napoleon in chains, followed by the muzzled Russian bear on a leash, and then three captive sovereigns. Behind them is a cheering crowd. A tattered Union flag flies from the car being drawn by a huge bull led by a sailor. In front of the sailor are soldiers, one with a drum and one with a trumpet. The procession disappears under the gate of the Tower of London. Source: George.
