Coach Demonstrates Fencing Techniques Vice chairman of the Amateur Fencing League, Robert Venegas, demonstrated the fencing tech niques of lunging, advancing and parrying to last week's fencing classes. Mr. Venegas, the assistant coach at the University of Chicago, has judged several Mundelein cham pionships. Sunday, Dec. 17, Venegas an nounced, would be a women's novice foil at the University of Chicago in Bartlett gym at 1 p.m. All Mun delein students are invited to attend or participate in the matches. Mrs. Thomas Ennis, Mundelein fencing coach, has been invited to give a lecture-demonstration on the method of group instruction used in Mundelein fencing classes. She will speak at a combination coach, conference and fencing clinic sponsored by the Amateur Fencing league. No, it's not a committee, it's junior Mary Lou Geist, history major, sports enthusiast and WAA presi dent. The portrait of this president is woven among the thread of two sweaters, one cardinal red and gray bearing an Antioch High School title and nine sport letters, the other, a white college (Mundelein) sweater which boasts a Mundelein sports letter and a WAA volleyball ribbon. Mary Lou's lively interest in sports was cultivated during her freshman year at Antioch High when a four-year gym program was interlaced with her academic stud ies. The brown-haired, brown-eyed athlete then launched her letter Meetings, Survey, Field Trip Fill December Faculty Schedule The pre-Christmas and holiday season is the time for varied fac ulty activities. Sister Mary Carol Frances, B.V.M., Sister Mary Agnesita, B.V.M., and Mother St. Agnes, S.S.C.M., of the theology depart ment, are attending a meeting of the Chicago chapter of the Reli gious Education Association today, Dec. 13, at a Loop YWCA. This month's meeting of the REA, a national organization of leaders of various faiths and pro fessions, is considering research projects to improve religious and character formation. On Dec. 28, Sister Mary Carol Frances and Sister Mary Agnesita will attend the La Crosse Diocesan CCD conference, at which Sister Mary Carol Frances will speak on modern catechetics. Dec. 28-30 will find Sister Mary Donald, B.V.M., chairman of the classics department, in Detroit at the annual meeting of the Ameri can Philological Association. Chairman of the economics de partment, Sister Mary Eloise, B.V.M., is collecting data on the methods of 32 Midwestern colleges which are incorporating Pope John's encyclical Mater et Magistra into their courses. Sister is partici pating in a survey program spon sored by the Catholic Economics Association. Of these, basketball remains her favorite sport, and she delights in the slightest mention of the game. This enthusiasm led her to place on her high school's All-Star Basket ball Team, an achievement which earned her one sports letter. She received another letter for allover athletic participation. An additional two letters sprang from membership in the color guard and marching unit. High stepping in navy blue skirts, white blouses and blazers, white gloves and bucks, this unit presented the colors at most of the high school gatherings. The group's biggest thrill, Mary claims, was march ing in the Waukegan Centennial parade in the summer of 1959. As an all-around student, Mary Lou won journalism pins in her sophomore, junior and senior years. She was awarded a Future Home- maker letter, was graduated with honors and was a member of the National Honor Society. A red and gold Mundelein M decorates Mary's Mundelein sweater. The WAA awarded it to her for attending a required num ber of practice sessions and games in sports. The blue third-place vol leyball ribbon was awarded to each member of last year's volleyball team. Why does this history major con sider sports a hobby ? A move from the city to the country where I now live, incited a keen interest in ath letics because in a small town with a small school sports are very im portant. Her aim as WAA president is to work with other girls to try to get students out for sports. We're trying to impress upon Mundelein girls that physical fitness is as im portant as intellectual attainment. Our gym is open at all times, and we want everyone to use it. Gallery Displays Photos Mundelein's eighth floor gallery is currently exhibiting photog rapher Les Klug's work. Mr. Klug studied at the Univer sity of Wisconsin and is now em ployed in the university's photog raphy laboratory. Twenty to 25 prints are being shown and are priced within the students' range.
