y dcraptnad pina CAPITULATION UNDER FIRE DEPT. The availability of trivia (and the rising cost of satire) being such that it can no long er accomodate the weekly de mand, this column could often be more aptly termed barrel- scrapings. Knowing full well that for want of grist for the Maw we become didactic and dogmatic, launch diatribes a- gainst innocuous trends, (a bit like kicking a dead horse, or a dwarf) avail ourselves too lic entiously of this unique oppor tunity for undocumented editor ializing. Therefore, as yet anoth er trial of Student Apathy, we are establishing a Suggestion Box in 707 (known to its motley clien tele as The Skyscraper Of fice. ) This system is akin to the anonymous informant ser vice provided by many Big League newspapers. The reader, under no peril to his/her skin, having detected a paradox or inconsis tency in the works capable of comment by the Public Eye and the Private Ear, may simply convey this priveleged informa tion to us by means of the Sty gian channel now open. Those of you who have been here thirty years may remember that this column originated as a vessel for the announcement of Engage ments and Pinnings. Of dust we were contrived and to dust we could return. This could be the period of our decadence. This is an unequivocal plea for Help. (Please ... no complaints about our Stylistic Tricks. Our James Joyce complex must be consid ered a constant.) AN OVERVIEW OF THE MICRO COSM: Though barely big enough to comprise the population of one Gallup Poll, Mundelein boasts of a full scale of Political trends. The Student Activities, or Cam pus Radicals, a minor but vocal faction (that inevitable combina tion) have managed to .shoutdown a substantial backwash of ex treme rightists (If indeed these last have ever spoken up) and now, in the period of their as cendancy, have a name; Students HEW FIND SCHOLARSHIPS BY COMPUTER Last year 30 million in college schol arships went unclaimed because no qualified persons applied . . . because no qualified persons knew of them. Now ECS engineers and educators have programmed a high-speed com puter with 700,000 items of scholastic aid, worth over 500 million, to permit students to easily and quickly locate scholarships for which they qualify. The student fills out a detailed, con fidential questionnaire and returns it to ECS, with a one-time computer-proces sing fee of 15. In seconds the compu ter compares his qualifications against requirements of grants set up by foun dations, business, civic, fraternal, re ligious, and government organizations, and prints a personalized report' to the student telling him where and when to apply for grants for which he qual ifies. Thousands of these do not depend on scholastic standing or financial need. FREE INFORMATION ANO SAMPLE QUESTIONNAIRE EaaQ 199 MASS NOBTM AMBRICAN BDUCATIONAL COMPuna acDvicia. INC. Aumrneer tom. The process of its evolution is interesting; the students first hit on STOP (Stu dents to Oppose Policies), pro gressed to STUN (Students for Unconditional Negotiation) to STIR (Students to Instigate Re volt) and almost settled for SI- TAR (Students In Training for Armed Rebellion). Finally they decided to eschew acrostics all together, since through some quirk of philology the only pos sibilities containing the essen tial word students were load ed terms which belied the or ganization's pacifistic intent. UNDERVIEW OF THE MACRO COSM: Far in our Forgettable pasts, most of us recall a stage of dabbling in Chemistry Sets and Science Fiction. At some subsequent point we ceased to be infused with Wonder at the Uni verse. Seeking to recapture such buried penchants, we took a trip to the Adler Planetarium, which as all you amateur astrophysi cists know, features a huge dome- shaped lecture hall wherein lec tures are illustrated by the march of the night sky across the ceil ing. The stars are viewed sans pollution (in fact the Adler plan etarium is the only site in Chi cago where the stars may be seen at all) may be projected as seen from any given point on earth. Sitting in resolute rapt ness we experienced the odd sensation of getting claustro phobia under the Firmament, contracted acute muscular strain from craning our necks in an ellipse and fell asleep in the middle of the vernal equinox. Cowed by the futility of it all, we filed out of the room be hind two twelve year old boys who by their erudite conversa tion evinced considerable exper tise on the subject of telescopes and related fields. How Wonder ful to be so dedicated. To have your Major Appointed from birth. SHOULD MUNDELEIN SECEDE. DEPT. it comes as enlighten ment to many that bristling bird on Mundelein's seal is a phoenix, and not an eagle, as popularly suspected. The entire issue had to be reexamined, however, when a huge representation of the seal was cast for the President's Din ner, (complete with that fancy Latin elaboration on the word Chicago . If you didn't know Chicago could be declined, you have underestimated Latin scholars' powers of insinuation). Since the eagle is obviously eas ier to visualize than the phoenix, the seal could as easily be mis interpreted as a banner of Na tionalism and belligerence in stead of a token of our demure resurgence for indeterminate Cineribus (Is that what they call the '30s?). THE FOURTH ESTATE IS TAX EMEMPT. DEPT. We were fortunately induced to abandon our Nelly Bly inspired plan to crash the President's Dinner when a sudden windfall provided us with Legitimate admission. So dazzled were our ingenuous eyes by such unaccustomed bril- lance that we forgot to act in our columnar capacity and take notes on What Everyone was Wearing. French linguists complete fwo terms of study, travel by Carol Summers Fourteen Mundelein students traveled to Europe for 6 months during the spring and summer under the Travel-Study Program. Sister Mary Elsa, French Department, was responsible for the foundation of the program in 1965 as a four month tour. Sister feels that in order to speak a lan guage fluently or to teach it properly, one should spend time in the particular country. In Chartres and Paris the girls boarded at a youth hostel and completed a regular term's work, including courses in Sym bolist Poets and Explication du Texte. The students were given all of June and 2 weeks in Sep tember to travel through other European countries such as Italy, Austria, Germany, Switzerland, England, Ireland, Belgium, Spain, Norway, Sweden, Denmark, and Holland. In July and August, courses in French language and literature especially planned for foreign students were offered at the University of Dijon. There were also weekend cultural acti vities and conferences, films, and folk-sings in the afternoons. . Sister Irene Branchaud, chairman of the French depart ment, feels that the trip was a success, but there were two drawbacks involved with having the tour in the summer: first, French students have no classes in the summer and consequently not all the Mundelein students got to meet them and stay in their homes. Also, there were too many American and foreign students there for the girls to become well-acquainted with the French. Second, although the trip was planned as a travel-study tour, students tended to travel more than study during the sum mer. Sister suggested having the tour during another term to solve the seasonal problem. Trish Carroll, a junior, took eight weeks of classes during the summer, includingcoursesin French civilization, literature, grammar, composition and phonetics. Another junior, Donna Michels said she felt at ease with the French people. She took courses in French medieval literature, translation, st.vlistics (grammar and phrases), and daily French (slang and often-used expres sions). Donna had the exper ience of living in a French coun try home which had only a kitchen and a bedroom. In this rural area, a priest came only once a month. But in contrast to these rural conditions, the family had a tele vision set. In Milan, Italy, Donna stayed with a family in which each member could speak a dif ferent language: Donna spoke German to the father, French to the mother and English to the son.
