Page Five - The SKYSCRAPER - November 1,1968 Biafran student leader charges genocide worse than Nazi brutality Idet Inwang, president of the Chicago Biafran Students Association, described the Nigerian-Biafran Civil War as a war of genocide even more brutal than the Nazi's liquidation of the Jews in World War II. He described the extent of the brutality and the origins of the war in a discussion on campus last Thursday. The Nigerians bomb hospi- fication of Nigeria for admin - tals and schools, the Biafran claimed. Their soldiers shoot women having labor pains in hospitals and then dissect the fetus. In parts of Biafra the Ni gerians have captured, they do not give people food to prevent starvation, but rather food must be flown in by the World Council of Churches or the Catholic Fund. According to Inwang, one of the first errors leading to the present war was Britain's uni- istrative purposes in 1914. She disregarded the important so ciological and religious differ ences between the people of the North and the South. For example, the people of the North stem from an Islamic background, while those of the south are Negroid and Chris tians or pagans. Biafra, originally the south eastern section of Nigeria, seceded from the federation in 1967. In 1966, Nigerian offi cials blamed the Ibo tribe of Theologian depicts 'Peanuts' gospel By Jean Potyen Armed with a propensity for puns, a variety of Peanuts slides, and a sound theology, Robert Short assailed Loyola's Finnegan Auditorium, Tuesday night. In Short, God came out of the pumpkin patch. Short, who wrote The Gos pel According to Peanuts, is presently teaching at the Uni versity of Chicago Divinity School, working with new-slant courses like Ethics in Society and Religion in Personality. With the idea of communica tion through culture conveyed through lectures on Pea nuts, Short financed his B.A. from S.M.U., M.A. from North Texas State, and Ph.D. in theology and literature from the University of Chi cago. Loyola's lecture was a con densation of the book, cou pling St. Matthew's parable of the house built on sand with Linus's sand castles. Original sin with Charlie Brown's un- fortunate circumstance of being Charle Brown, and transforming Snoopy into a hound of heaven. The tree has long been (POLITICAL ADVERTISEMENT WRITE IN McCarthy used as a symbol in literature for the cross, and each of us has his cross to bear, Mr. Short commented, turning the slide to Charlie Brown and his perpetual tangles with tree punctured kites. Original sin is man's ever- present evil. Man is born a sinner and we're all rotten. And the slide turned to Lucy jerking the football away from Charlie Brown's kick. We all cling to false gods, and Linus clings to his blanket. Short explained that the modern audience would be in sulted hearing of the evil of man directly from the pulpit, but taken in a roundabout ap proach, through art, litera ture, and comic strips, the blow to man's ego is softened, but effective. Charles Schultz, author of Peanuts knows the Bible, teaches Bible class es, and uses the everyman Peanuts salted with theolo gy to reach the everyman au dience. Inwang claims the Nigerians never had any proof the tribe was responsible for the coup. Nor did the commission estab lished to investigate the coup ever meet. Despite the lack of evidence, mass reprisals were held against easterners, not just Ibos, living in the North. Over 30,000 people were killed and nearly 2 million refugees fled from the North to Biafra. What kind of government uses its army and police to shoot its people rather than to protect them? he asked. Answering a question on the position of the United States government, Inwang replied that the United States claims she is neutral. But, he added, America has sufficient diplomatic power in the United Nations to do something about the war. At the end of the discussion, sponsored by the MSC and Alpha Sigma Phi fraternity of Loyola, nearly 85 was col lected to purchase food for the Biafrans. MSC and Loyola Student Government will co-sponsor a cultural program of Biafran dances, tribal chants and African clothing, Nov. 16. The program, produced by the Chi cago Biafran Students' Asso ciation, will include Cecilia Onyewuenyi, Mundelein junior. are your contact lenses more work than fliqfae worth?
