title:
Physical Aid, -or- Britannia recover'd from a trance; - also the patriotic courage of Sherry Andrew and a peep thro' the Fog
date:
March 14, 1803
description:
Britannia, dressed in Roman costume and shrieking with her arms raised, is sitting on the ground supported by Addington and Hawkesbury and defended by Sheridan, dressed as a Harlequin. They are on a coast with rowboats full of French soldiers coming towards them. The beach beneath them is covered in smoke. Napoleon stands with drawn sword in the first boat, a tiny figure with a large head and no body. The distant French coast shows French troops marching towards the shore. Addington is holding a bottle of Gunpowder to Britannia's nose. Hawkesbury looks down and supports her cracked shield while holding her damaged spear. Sheridan holds Harlequin's wooden sword in his right hand and on his left arm he wears a shield with Medusa's head. On his head he wears a hat turned up in front with a tricoulour cockade, the crown is a fool's cap with two ears and a bell while around his waist he wears a tricolour sash with a paper stuck through it. Between Addington and Sheridan the head of Fox appears, holding his hat before his eyes. In the foreground is a torn scroll. Source: George.
