Sister Mary Am brose, B.V.M., chairman of the History department, reviews Waldo Frank's Birth of a World: Bolivar in Terms ok Hjs People for the December issue of Books On Trial. The January issue includes Sister's review of Fear of Free dom by Francis Biddle. Sister Mary Donald, B.V.M., chairman of the Classics department, contributes an article on Church Latin in a second year course to the Classical Weekly magazine. Sister suggestes the use of selections from the Roman breviary, mis sal, and church ritual in such classes. Catholic Action was the topic of a talk given by Sister Mary Virgina, B.V.M., of the English department, in Battle Creek, Michigan, Jan 31. Sister spoke to high school seniors and nursing students. Sister Mary Irma, B.V.M., of the Eng lish department, talked on Philosophical and Techical Training for Writers, at the Press Workshop Here. Feb. 10. Sister Mary Benedict, B.V.M., chair man of the Psychology and Education departments, co-contributes annotated bibliographies of 17 books to the edu cation section of the 1952 Catholic Booklist. Her co-worker is Sister Mary Teresa Frances, B.V.M., director of the B.V.M. Board of Education. The Cath olic Library association edits the publi cation. Good Pictures Will Dramatize Your Products is the title of an article which Patricia Hanson, '49, of the Publicity de partment, contributes for the Chicago Market Daily. High Schools Compete In Mathematics Twenty-five high schools will par ticipate in the Fifth Annual Mathemat ics tournament, March 1. Made up of eight rounds of three problems each, the tournament will include material from arithmetic, algebra, and geometry. The two high schools scoring the most points and the six individual high- . est scoring students will merit awards. Participants in the tourney will be en tertained at a tea sponsored by the Mathematics department. Debaters Discuss Price Controls Northwestern university was the scene of the annual Western Debate tourna ment, Feb. 16. Senior debaters from west ern area colleges met to discuss the na tional collegiate debate topic, Resolved: the Federal government should adopt a permanent program of price and wage controls. Mary Nikias and Joyce Gutzeit pre sented the negative argument, while Shir ley Geiser and Arlene Gorgol proposed the affirmative. Margaret Hanley and Marilyn Putter assist in preparation for the Library Book Week exhibits. (Story on Page 1.) Juniors Worry About World Woes Conducting a current events discussion Feb. 12 were juniors in the History de partment. Marilyn Becic, Joan Bruno. Jean Hirsch, Donna Fox, Rosemary Burns, and Cathryn Snell caught per formances of South Pacific before it left town. Betty Berres and Dorothy Hertl viewed The Student Prince during its Chicago run. Ballet enthusiasts were well supplied with a choice of performances. Mary Mahoney watched the Sadlers Wells company pirouette and pas a pas, while Katherine Murphy viewed Jose Greco's Spanish Ballet at the Blackstone Theatre. The turn of the term also became the turn of another senior to wear a tliird-finger-left-hand gem; Mary Jane Lamb and Robert G. Mortenson are the engagees. Packing their skiis and snowshoes, Regina Dowd and Mary Burke tripped off to the Northernairre in Wisconsin to spend a week-end in the great out doors. Preferring a more torrid clim ate. Martha Pelligrini and Lois Schnei der headed to the Southland to catch a bit of Florida sunshine to bring home in the form of beautiful tans. It docs reassure us to know that the sun is still shining . . . somewhere Marquette university entertained Anne McCarty, Patricia Church, Bar bara Sehner, Betty Cadwell, Mary Lou Gleason, Dorothy Monahan, and Joan Maier recently. Eleanor Paliatka was one, of the speakers at a meeting of the Ferdek Slovak society, held recently at the Conrad Hilton hotel. The Northwestern Ball was attended hy Mary Frances Kelly, while Roberta Hughes, Anne Fitzgerald, and Noreen Ryan tripped lightly at a recent Notre Dame Chicago club dance.
