IHE n Vol XXXVIII Mundelein CoUege, Chicago. Illinois, 60626. April 9. 1968 Dr. Martin Luther King 1929-1968 Reflections Two black men sitting on a fence. Brother Malcolm on the violent side, Rev. King for peace. Two black men with different choices Raising their heads and lifting their voices. King said, Somewhere I read of freedom to assemble, somewhere I read of freedom of press, somewhere I read of freedom of speech. Malcolm said, The white man made the mistake of teaching me that radicals like Patrick Henry were heroes. Rev. King, you were right, you did read of freedom and equality for all, but the words were written by white writers for white readers only. Brother Malcolm, you were right, you did read about the radical heroes. One thing you didn't read was that the Constitution is for everyone . . . everyone white. Some of you say no. If not, why were these two black men fighting for Civil Rights? We should have been born with them. Instead they pass a bill to grant us the privilege of voting, speech and press. Black people, open your eyes. After the Emancipation you were and still are in semi-bondage. Malcolm knew, he tried to free us violently . . . he died. Rev. King knew, he tried to free us peacefully . . . he died. Some say King had sold out. If he had, Mr. Charlie has just killed one of his most prestigious Toms. Either way, the Rev. Doctor Martin Luther King is now a martyr. People, don't forget what he died for, freedom and equality for all, not contentment as semi-slaves in the land of the free and the home of the brave. The brave don't shoot unarmed men. May you rest in peace as your dream slowly unfolds. Irma McClaurin Mundelein Upward Bound Lucy Flower High School
