Interest seems low Catholicism: worth investment? (EDITOR'S NOTE: The survey was conducted by a fresh man reporting class and compiled by Rori Callanan, Eileen Jack and Mary Ann Novak.) Less than ten years ago, the Catholic Church symbolized a steadfast, serene structure, its laymen and clergy loyal citizens of the world's oldest organization. Today this once calm society, replaced by dissent and revolt, is composed at least in part of questioning individuals who hesitate to accept the advice and commands of its hierarchy. To discover the relevance of religion to students at Munde lein, a survey was conducted last term, questioning the per tinence of the mass and sac raments, the strongest source of students' religious attitudes and their future religious plans for their children. Of the 305 students inter viewed in a random sampling, 38 of the 75 seniors feel that the mass and the sacraments are relevant to their lives, as compared with 56 of the 50 juniors, 42 of the 80 sopho mores and 75 of the 100 freshmen. The majority of the inter viewed students stress that the modern mass has more significance for them, espe cially when contemporary mu sic is used. The new mass is easier to understand and fol low. A sophomore, describes the new attitude: At Mundelein, I feel the mass is personal, relevant and to the point. meaningless masses However, some students feel the mass is meaningless, whether at Mundelein or else where. The mass is a good idea, but the idea has been sadly abused, states another soph omore. When we can come togeth er meaningfully, loving each other, the mass will mean something. For me to go to mass would be hypocritical and un just, one student says. The service says nothing to me and therefore, I bring nothing to it. My parents would be ashamed to know I don't at tend, but I would be so much more ashamed if I did. out-dated penace Regarding the sacraments, no clear consensus emerges. Several specific sacraments are rejected as out-of-date. Penance is the most highly attacked. More than half the students do not feel a need for Pe nance. They tend to agree that it should be a general rather than a private means of forgiveness. I can't remember the last time I went to confession, one junior explains. I would rather talk to a person about what I've been doing with my life than someone pretending to be God. Unlike Penance, Holy Eu charist is considered relevant. Ninety-one percent of the 305 questioned agree with one (Continued on page 3) Vol. XXXIX Mundelein College, Chicago, 111. 60626, January 17,1969 111 No. 9
