Page Six THE SKYSCRAPER Oct. 19,1966 Si News Briefs Laetare Play: Departing from the conventional three-act play the Lae tare Players will present two one-act plays Nov. 19 and 20. The productions, under the direction of Miss Mary Penkala of the drama department, are Songs of Louise in the Morning by Patricia Joudry and Not Enough Rope, a comedy by Elaine May who was Mike Ni- chol's partner in the comedy team Nichols and May. Auditions will begin later in October. Education Meeting: Sister Mary I. Griffin, B.V.M., academic dean, at tended a meeting of the American Council on Education in New Or leans, Oct. 12-14, in her capacity as a member of the Council's Com mission on Academic Affairs. The topic discussed was Improving College Teaching: Aids and Impediments. Sister also participated in a conference of the Executive Committee for Higher Education, Oct. 14 and 15 in New Orleans. Auxiliary Tea: The Mundelein College Women's Auxiliary will hold a tea and reception for the mothers of the freshman class Oct. 22 at 1:30 p.m. Featured at the tea will be demonstrations of wig and hair styling. Chairman Mrs. Frank Mass and co-chairman Mrs. Harold Youssi extend an invitation to all mothers of Mundelein stu dents and their guests to attend. Alpha Omicron: Alpha Omicron, the home economics club, will hold an open house Oct. 19, from 12 noon to 3:30 p.m. in 406. The club in vites all students to visit their model apartment which was newly decorated under the direction of Mrs. Phyllis Utley, the club's mod erator. Refreshments will be served under the direction of Carol Olivieri, social chairman. Chemistry Chairman: Sister Marina Kennelly, B.V.M., chemistry chair man, has been asked to join the Visiting Scientists of Illinois, a group formed to encourage high school students to pursue science in college. Sister Marina has also been appointed to the Scholarship Committee of the Chicago chapter of the American Chemical So ciety. Business Computer: Keeping up with the modern advances in the busi ness world, Mundelein has recently acquired an IBM 6400 machine to do all of the accounting functions for the business office and the Bursar. The IBM 6400 is capable of completing four operations at one time and of making statistical reports and financial statements, saving a great deal of time which can be given to other important tasks, Sister Mary Frederick Cecile Zonsius, B.V.M., bursar, and Sister Mary Brenan Breslin, B.V.M., assistant business manager, have writ ten all the programs for the computer. Faculty Day: Mundelein's tearoom will be the scene of Project Friend ship Oct. 31. Between the hours of 11 a.m. and 1 p.m., all faculty members will be invited to visit the tearoom. In order to further personal relations between faculty and students, girls will be en couraged to invite faculty members to lunch. Mundelein's Student Congress, sponsor of the project, hopes that this will be the start of many new friendships between faculty and students. United Nations: A United Nations program sponsored by the League of Women Voters will be held in McMormick Lounge at 8 p.m., Oct. 24. Planned in observance of United Nations Day, the program will fea ture a discussion encompassing the accomplishments and future prospects of the U.N. All are cordially invited to attend. Alumnae Couple College Day And Groundbreaking Program Once again, it comes time for the Great Pumpkin to lift his hoary head to haunt bad Peanuts every where. And, before the alliteration becomes too overpowering, perhaps it would be wise to move on to other topics. For instance, wouldn't it make a nice four-day weekend if there were no classes on Halloween? There would be so much more time for trick-or-treating at Hamilton's, the Red Garter, Moody's Pub. Enough of this frivolity. Educa tion is a serious business, bringing many a dedicated scholar to the li brary. In case no one has noticed, finding the proper section among the reserve shelves can be a chal- President Jets 'Cross Country Giving Lectures Starting Oct. 19, Sister Ann Ida Gannon, B.V.M., president, will travel half-way across the country, representing Mundelein to such di verse groups as the Theresians and the Girl Scouts. Relevance of Theology in the Modern World will be Sister's topic tonight, Oct. 19, as guest speaker at the Xavier Forum Series in Cincinnati, Ohio. Sponsored by Xavier University, the series is open to the public. Immediately following this, Sis ter Ann Ida travels to Detroit, Oct. 20-27, for the 47th Convention of the Girl Scout National Council. Sister was recently appointed to a three-year term on the Board of Directors of the Girl Scouts. The president explained her new posi tion by saying that the Girl Scouts are interested in the role of higher education for women. From Detroit, Sister Ann Ida will go to Scottsdale, Ariz., Oct. 27. There Sister will address the Tuc son Diocesan Council of Catholic Women on The Catholic Woman and Ecumenism. Before returning to Chicago, Sis ter Ann Ida will address the There- sian's National Conference in Dal las, Texas, Oct. 30. Sister will talk on Renewal in the Sisterhood to the organization of lay women dedi cated to the sisterhood. The Alumnae Back to College Day will be held Nov. 6 in conjunc tion with the groundbreaking cere mony of the new Learning Re source Center scheduled for 3 p.m. the same afternoon. The Back to College Day regis tration will be at 10:30 a.m.; the program will continue through the day and conclude at 4 p.m. with a homecoming tea and reception in McCormick Lounge. Anyway, comfortable is a real big word . . . The East Room is a comfortable parlor ; Lewis Center has comfortable chairs ; in McCormick Lounge usually comfortable couches and chairs are placed ; and so are the study lounges comfortable. Which brings up another point. How does it happen that study Room 512 is directly above study Room 405? Perhaps it has some thing to do with the two elevators that aren't and are offices in stead? Really now ladies, as students at an urbane, sophisticated institution, is it necessary to stigmatize those poor lost fledglings known as fresh men with a beanie? Oh yes, they identify the peer group, breed se curity and assurance, fulfill tradi tion and provide a first filler for scrapbooks and let the upperclass- men stage beanie raids. What other social institution can say that much? Certainly not the mixer Traditionally, there is sophomore slump, but what about senior cyni cism? Comments concerning sen ior comprehensives, those exams to end all exams, are hardly what might be called conducive to enthu siasm. As a matter of fact, nega tive might more aptly describe the attitude. Ye merry olde English majeurs hark, 'tis a day deare to your hearts which is about to occur. Chaucer's having a birthday he's 621 or 626, depending on which year is ac cepted as his birth date. It might at times be convenient to be able to change a year of birth at whim but, unfortunately, it's illegal.
