Frivolity Flourishes At Mardi Qras Ball Edgewater Beach Hotel is Setting Just as before the famine the feast must come, so, before Lent, Munde lein's Mardi Gras will enliven the pre-Ash-Wednesday season. Amidst the merry frivolity of Mardi Gras, romance flourishes, mystery and excitement are con jured, and masked maidens frolic with masked escorts. The festive, semi-formal Prom, sponsored by the Junior class, will be held in the Crystal Ballroom of the Edgewater Beach hotel on Feb. 18. Dick Long and his orchestra will provide the music. IA participant in many Mundelein lays and currently co-designed for Barlow and Substance, Mr. Fosser ps studied at the Art Institute and the Goodman theatre, and is chief Itnic artist for Kling studio. I His Genesius, a tall ascetic figure i green, is presented against a lormy blue and white sky. IA favorite actor of the pagan Iweror Diocletian, Genesius, a his- rical character, was ordered by the iperor to impersonate a Christian. Studying the role, he became in- fcrested in Christianity and finally pered the Christian ranks. At the loperial first night he portrayed fc role of a convert so well that the fence sensed his actual belief, lerjan condemned him at once, ordered his execution. CHEMISTRY researcn absorbs Seniors Ruth Masterson, Collette Trzcinski, and Arline Jarrett, who are eligible for Civil Service appointments with GS-5 ratings. Sodality Elects Six To Council Schedules Lecture For Feb. 15 Six new members, elected this month, will join the Sodality Spiri tual Council, sharing in the work of handling Group meetings. The six are Mary Devitt, Marg aret Mahoney, Barbara Mannix, Jeanette Nomaczyk, Helen Walsh, and Margaret Coughlan. Sodality members will hear Father L. J. Evett, S.J., of Loyola, on Feb. 15, when he talks on the 1954 ad dress of Pope Pius XII to Sodalists. Father Michael Dempsey, A.M., of the Religion department, talked on the Lay Apostolate at the Jan uary meeting. Chemistry Majors Receive Civil Service Ratings Three Chemistry majors, Arline Jarrett, Ruth Masterson, and Col lette Trzcinski, have received word that they are eligible for Civil Serv ice appointments as chemists with GS-5 ratings. Two of these students have been carrying on senior research, Miss Trzcinski has been working on the preparation of derivatives of the drug ephedrine. After the pharmacological testing of such synthetic compounds a study of their structure-activity re lationships will be undertaken. Miss Jarrett is working on the preparation and study of iridium complex coordination compounds as part of the Coordination Chemistry research being carried on in the de partment. Mathematicians And Historians Trace Evolution of Numbers BEFORE t'le **ar lt;** Gras, Junior chairmen take a preview of their gowns. History and Mathematics majors will turn the calendar back 12 cen turies Feb. 8 and review the back grounds of modern design, the roots of contemporary mathemati cal calculation, and aspects of the Mohammedan movement in Eur ope from the eighth to the tenth centuries. Ann Kobal will present the history of Mohammedanism to its entrenchment in Spain. She will show that all addition, sub- Iraction, multiplication, and divi sion in today's textbooks stem from Arabic origins. Marilyn Flynn will examine the reaction of Christian Europe to the Mohammedan influence, not ing the wary reception accorded Avarroes and other Arabians whose philosophy permeated Eur ope during the Mohammedan movement. Vivian Carroll will con clude the discussions with an account of the care the Ro man Catholic Church took to distinguish between the good and the error of the Arabic learning. While condemning the philoso phic faults of the Mohammedans, it recognized the merit of the math ematical advances. For instance, Gerbert, who later became Pope Sylvester II, went from France to Barcelona to study Moslem mathe matics. The chairman, Lillian Hartke, will introduce the subject of the integrated program.
