May 16, 1962 THE SKYSCRAPER Page Nine mHmmaaamm Clubs Announce Plans For Farewell Activities CLAP HANDS and join the Undertones Ann Marie Wenthe, Anne Schnei der, Marge Wechter and Carol Bellamy. CBS Audition Boosts Undertones' Career Where have all the Undertones gone, short time a passin'? Gone to CBS every one. . . . When four girls and a guitar arrived at the CBS auditioning studio to find that only four girls would be allowed to perform they thought their day was a flop. Because of musician union rules, Carol Bellamy, Ann Marie Wenthe, Marge Wechter and Anne Schnei der were told that they could not be taped in the studio playing their own instrument. And without a guitar, folk singers are not folk singers. But Mr. George Ramsby of CBS saved the audition. By suggesting that the Undertones (plus guitar) try out for the head of program ming and the head of auditions in a small office instead of the record ing studio, he devised a way legally to sidestep the rules. After the audition, the vice presi dent of the booking agency that handles the Kingston Trio, the Clancy Brothers and Al Hirt inter viewed the group. Explaining that they need coffee shop experience on a wide circuit to get a start in the business, he promised to rec ommend them to Bob and Jim Gib son and the former owner of the Gate of Horn who are interested in buying and building folk singing groups. He also suggested they make a professional tape and send it to record companies. Then, producer George Walsh of Music Wagon, WBBM, who had overheard the audition, asked them to appear on the Mai Bellairs Show, May 4. Next came Bill Mason of CBS News to request the folk sing ers' appearance at the Clarendon Hills Lions Club. Their latest bid is to sing at the Hyde Park Art Festival May 20. They were completely bowled over Graduating senior, Mrs. Barbara Lyden and her three children will accompany her husband, Robert, an architect-engineer, to Bangkok, Thailand, where he is to be em ployed by the U. S. Navy for the design of military constructions in Laos, Cambodia and South Vietnam. The bases are being constructed to help those countries resisting the Communists. On returning to their car after horseback riding, Pat Krochmal, Sue Kelly, Mary Anne Thomas and Mary Li Cavoli discovered that the keys were inside the locked auto. They immediately dialed the local police, and, after relating their story and entering a plea for help, an amused voice uttered into the phone, You are speaking to the Edison Co. When they finally reached a policeman and he re solved their problem with a nail file, the gallant officer waited to see that they started off alright. But, unfortunately, the car had a hole in the muffler, and the Eques triennes feared they'd get a ticket if they started up the motor. So, they sat nervously for 15 minutes until the officer, who had been giv ing them questioning glances (to say the least), finally left.
