THE SKYSCRAPER Mundelein College 6363 Sheridan Rd., Chicago, 111., 60626 SCIENCE FICTION SUPPLEMENT There was once a small principality which was looking for a functional deity. The eld ers were holding their custom ary meeting in the spot ap pointed by usage, in the shade of a Eucalyptus tree. It seems, said the Eldest, that the people are no longer satis fied with the Reigning Diety. His relevance, or Presence to their lives is at best, proble matical. So they have initiated a referendum for his Recall. We have been delegated, as Standing Ad Hoc Committee, to choose his replacement. I don't see. objected a spokesman for the Revisionist Middle-aged bloc, what was the matter with the old Deity. He gave us a pretty good deal. You scratch my back and I'll scratch yours, and all that. But, sputtered the Eldest, nearly choking on his Betel Nut, He can't handle today's jobs with Yesterday's Skills And what is the Deity's job? chimed in a supporter. Why, merely, with his dis tended intellect, to keep track of all the various complex processes simultaneously oper ative in the universe, seeing as how, if he ever let his mind wander, all the sparrows would drop dead. Obviously, he can be replaced by a Com puter. Fools Upspake the Wisest. (There's one in every Peer Group) the solution is much more Grass Roots. What is it (this speech accompanied by a mesmeric, fanatical glare) that controls our life processes and insures the Per petuation of our Species, that determines Heredity and di rects metabolism? To which, in short, we owe All That We Are, and All That We Shall Become? Why, DNA (Blank Stupefaction Reigns) Deoxy ribonucleic Acid You have Three feet of it in the nucleus of every cell in your body But What is it? came the plaintive, insistent whine. Skip it, the sage said im patiently. Just believe it's there. Then he told them how DNA was integrally connected with their vital interests. How if DNA made one minute slip, Deans clarify pass-fail A clarification of the Pass- Fail option for electives re sulted from the regular staff meeting of Sister M. Griffin, academic dean, Sister M. Jean Dolores Schmidt, sophomore dean, Sister Marilou Denbo, freshman dean and Mrs. Mary O'Dowd, registrar, Feb. 22. Sister M. Griffin, announced the following clarifications: 1. A student must opt for pass-fail at registration. Re garding this term, the pass- fail option must be chosen during the first week. Students must indicate what courses they will take on pass-fail next year at pre-registration in May. 2. A pass is equivalent to any letter grade above F. 3. A student does not need the approval of the instructor to elect the pass-fail option, provided the course is not a Basic Studies, an education requirement, or within the ten required major courses. 4. The pass-fail grade may not be changed on a transcript when the latter is sent to a graduate school or employer. 5. The pass-fail option and an audit are not identical. A pass-fail student receives full credit for the course and is expected to fulfill all course requirements. An audit is a non-credit course and students need not fulfill course require ments. REMEMBER: Classified rates are low. 5c per word for fac ulty and students, and 7c per word for others. 6. There is no limit to the number of courses a student may take on pass-fail during any given term. terrible genetic variation and deformity could ensue. How only DNA could avert the im pending Mutation of the En tire next generation due to ir radiation by Color TV sets. So, DNA was declared Most Wor thy of Propitiation, and the DNA for Deity campaign was launched. Soon, IT had en gaged the Holy Fear of the Masses. The Old Deity was just Out There, one PR popu- larizer of the day explained the phenomenon; But DNA is right in there kickin'. People took to wearing 3-foot long helix chain amulets around their necks. They chanted De-ox-y-ribonucleic acid in syncopated rhythm to the tune of Hold that Tiger. Worship practices, like Community Synthesis, in which partici pants joined hands and imi tated Proteins, and Catch Phrases like, Individuals die, but the DNA great Chain of Being straggles on forever, cropped up in profusion. Eventually, the much hailed Next Generation arrived, and it was found that the incidence of Mutation was every bit as high as the secularist experts of old had predicted. What'll we do now, said one dispir ited (and much older) Elder to another, in a universe where DNA is obviously indif ferent to our Welfare? Give up Color TV, ruefully replied his Interlocutor.
