Poetic Series New York poet Leo Conel- lan will give a reading from his works, Oct. 17, marking the beginning of the series. All the poets invited have been asked and have agreed to spend several days on campus to give the students an opportunity to talk with them. Among the poets al ready scheduled to read are Doug Eichorn, Syracuse Uni versity; Robert Bly, Wiscon sin; Allan Planz, New York; Bob Houston, Washington D.C; William Howard Cohen and his wife, Kentucky; Ruth Lisa Schecter, New York, and others. The invited poets have voices to be heard, ex plains James Ciletti, English department, who introduced the idea of the series. These poets come with the belief that poetry is read not only in solitude, but in community, in a situation where the poets' true music is heard, the poet ry in his spoken words. Powder-Puff Homecoming This year, the MSC has also combined the annual sopho more Cotillion with homecom ing, Nov. 1-3. The dance, Nov. 1, is in the Marina Room of Marina Towers, with music by the Daytonas. Nov. 2 will be marked by a parade, rally, and powder-puff football game against Barat College, Lake Forest, 111. Other activities and events include a Leadership Weekend at the Religious Education Center, Oct. 11-12. New dean solicits student expression Flexibility is the key word for Mrs. Gloria Lewis who replaces Sister Mary Cramer, now on a sabbatical, as dean of students. Formerly a counselor in the School of Ed ucation, a teaching assistant in counselor education and coordinator of the Counseling Center at Northwestern Uni versity, Mrs. Lewis received her Ph.D. from Northwestern in counselor education and student personnel work. Although she feels it impos sible for anyone to get the pulse of the school in the first week, Mrs. Lewis likes what she has seen thus far. Regarding her function as dean of students, Mrs. Lewis feels that her role depends on the needs of the students. Our office, she explained, encompasses everything out side of the classroom. Top priority, she said, will be given this year to deter mine what is needed to con vert the old library into a student union. She also wishes to encourage co-operation with Loyola wherever possi ble, and to promote the cul tural and social facilities of Chicago, hoping that students will not consider the seven or eight buildings here as their total campus. Her main concern is to reach the students and to en courage them to express their ideas, explaining that to the extent that the students and their leaders come up with ideas, it is our job in the dean of students' office to en courage and implement these ideas and programs. Mrs. Gloria Lewis Faculty designate senate chairmen Through a vote taken last spring, the newly formed faculty senate is headed by chairman Sister M. Eloise Thomas, economics, and vice-chairman Dr. Russell Barta, sociology. In addition to the two chairmen, the chairmen of the twelve senate committees compose the executive council. The members of the council are Sisters Carol Frances Jegen, Long Range Goals; M. Eliza Kenney, Programs and Convoca tions; Mary Wojnicki, Space Planning and Facilities; Jeannelle Bergen, Calendar and Schedule; M. Patricia Haley, Admissions and Entrance Scholarships; Michael Fortune, Curriculum; David Crosby, Faculty Programs; Mrs. Betty Matula, Academic Affairs; Gerald Honigsblum, Library; Dr. Gertrude Denning, Rank and Tenure; Marilyn Gorski, Faculty Welfare; Dr. Irene Meyer, Research and Development; Dr. Ann Matasar, Constitution. Initiated last spring after several months of organizational planning, the faculty senate provides each member with a voice in determining school policy.
