Clubs Invite Members To Share In The Joy Of Christmas Gift Giving VFRESHMAN Vol. XXVII Mundelein College, Chicago 40, Illinois, December 10, 1956 No. 6 Dolls for little girls, mistletoe for the mantle, baskets of food for needy families, toys and layettes for babies all these projects are being sponsored by students to ob tain gifts for distribution before the holidays. Hark, the Herald . . . Glee Club Sings Of Yuletide Joy, Blessed Things Velvet blue with stars that shine . . . every one I see is mine . . . Sounds as though the angels sing Angelic though it may sound, it's the Glee club not the Angels who are practicing for The Divine Light, Christmas cantata to be pre sented by the Glee club, Orchestra. Drama, and Art students, Dec. 16, at 8:15 p.m. Moonyeen Brown, Senior Music major, wrote both the words, including the ones above, and the music of this cantata, which is arranged for a chorus of women's voices, with soloists and orchestra. Soloists include Carole Bauer, Patricia Coakley, Audrey Cihlar, Joan Doherty, Vickie Larsen, Mary Anne Stepps, and Marilyn Zanke. During the cantata, a series of tableaux will portray scenes from the Christmas story. Taking part in these are Dolores Ferraro, Jean Johnson, Marcia Kelley, Mary To Valentino. Others in the tableaux are Ar lene Tufano, Patricia Lampe, Lu cille Cabo, Patricia O'Donnell, Barbara Kauth, Joan Spencer, Rita Mnickewicz, Norma Indovi- na, and Dorothy Strzechowski. The Under the Stars program will open with a Christmas Over ture, by Coleridge-Taylor, played by the College Orchestra, Mr. Adal bert Huguelet directing. A Chirstmas medley by the Orchestra will precede the cantata. Joan Kies, Senior Music major, will play her own arrangement of the ma rimba parts in this medley. George F. Petterson, technical director, will have as assistants Marythomas Helgeson, Ellen Scho en, Sandra Ivan, Barbara Gaynor, Carol Bannon, Jeri Boyle, Brigid From the Skyscraper . . . Nine-Story Cross Of Candlelight Will Radiate College Christmas Greeting To The City A nine-story Cross of Candlelight will shine from the south windows of the Skyscraper building, from 5 to 6 p.m., Tuesday, Dec. 18, heralding the Christmas season. Formed by 52 candles, the Cross will burn for one hour as a climax to the annual Caroling and Candlelighting pro gram, one of the most distinctive college traditions. i 11II 1111 K llll Inn ii ii 111111111 . MM , llll MM i III JIIM CANDLELIGHTING ceremony as the artist symbolizes it. Duffy, Mary Ann Fogarty, Marie Dickey, Elda Morena, Camilla Kennell, Carol Romanenghi, and Lynda Rousseau. The program cover for Under the Stars is being designed by Joyce Kuhlmann. Dreaming Of A White Christmas ' And An Exciting Formal Dance? Gleaming tinsel will adorn the evergreens, shining stars will make the snow-covered ground glisten, and the Skyscraper Ball will be the dazzling social climax of the holidays. First formal of the year, the Ball will be in the ele gantly decorated Grand Ballroom of the Sheraton Hotel on the evening of Friday, Dec. 28. Best of all, in the eyes of the sponsoring Student Activities Council, will be the mu sic of Dan Belloc. Patricia O'Donnell, SAC president, is general chair man. Rosemary Esposito heads the Bid committee, and Ann Coe, Lynne Sheeran, Annette Busse, and Alvena Shell are publicizing the formal. Marie Coyle selected the band, and Grace Luczak made the arrangements with the hotel. Dorothy Strze chowski heads the Chaperon committee. Forensics Honor Society Welcomes Five New Members The campus chapter of Delta Sigma Rho, National Forensic Honor society, will initiate five new members, Maureen Swee ney, Sandra Marek, Alice Bourke, June Chenelle, and Marguerite Phillips, Dec. 13. Officiating at the ceremony will be Margaret Coughlan, president; Joan Spencer, Jane Panka, and Patricia Lampe. College debaters will host 'he Chicago Area Debate association at a round of practice debates, Jan. 4. Elmhurst and Wheaton colleges and the universities of Illinois, Chicago, and Loyola will partici pate. Freshmen and Sophomore teams debated the cpiestion Should the United States discontinue direct economic aid to foreign countries, in a University of Illinois Navy Pier meet, Dec. 8. Visible for many blocks down Sheridan Road, the Cross is a Fac ulty-Student greeting to the city. The student body and Faculty members will assemble in the audi torium at 4:30 p.m., after each class has held its own festive party. The Verse choir and the Glee club will relate in speech and song the Nativity story from the Gospel of St. Luke, while the advanced group in Modern Dance class will in terpret the mood of joy and glory. Following this, class and club officers carrying lighted tapers will form a procession to the Stage, where Patricia O'Donnell. Student Activties Council president, will light the all-college candle. Immediately, club officers will go to specified windows on the south side of the building and, at a chime signal over the public ad dress system, will kindle the 52 tapers that form the Cross. When the officers return to the auditorium, Sister Mary John Michael, B.V.M., Presi dent of the College, will give the Faculty Christmas mes sage to the students. Organists playing at Candle lighting will be Katherine Jackson, Sue Haglund, Lucille Serchie, and Betty Gonway, all freshmen. Program Marks Centennial Of Woodrow Wilson A series of panel discussions, Dec. 14, will commemorate the centennial of Woodrow Wilson's birth, Dec. 28, 1856. Famed for his sponsorship of the League of Nations, Wilson was president of the United States from 1913 to 1920. Students in the Economics, Ed ucation, History, and Political Sci ence departments will present the panels, which will be open to all students. Considering Woodrow Wil son: Public Official, the Po litical Science department will present the first panel, at 9 a.m. Chairman Sheila Ponto will have as assistants Jeanette Nowaczyk, Elaine Reis, Kathleen Keegan, and Susan Bartlett. Barbara Bukowski will lead the 11 a.m. discussion of Woodrow Wilson, The Man and His Age, sponsored by the History depart ment. Participants will be Dor othy Capek, Sharon Roth, Rose mary Pordugal, and Eileen O' Brien. Scheduled for 1 p.m. is an in ter-departmental colloquim. Joan (Continued on Page 4, Col. 2.) How would you like a life- size doll in pink flannel sleep ers? Or, what about a tiny, rosy-cheeked blonde in a starched sky-blue original with overskirt of blue-tinted dotted swiss organdy? Well, you can't have them, but you are invited to come to see them and donate to the project that the Economics club is sponsoring for underprivileged children. The dolls will be on displav in 502 un til Dec. 18. Christine Cesario, assisted by Mary Breslin, Shirley Hoyle, and Marguerite Molitor,' planned the drive and will deliver the dolls to the West Side CYO center. Kay Slattery, Mary Ann Annetti, Bet ty Garbais, Mary Devitt, and Ei leen Poterek have arranged the display. To obtain funds for a poor mission in the south, the So dality will sponsor a mistle toe sale in the lounge, on Dec. 14, 17, and 18. Preparation of a Christmas basket for a Chicago family is another of the Sodality's projects. The International Relations club, believing that Christmas is for children, is collecting baby clothes for St. Vincent's orphan age. Shoes, blankets, and any new or used clothing suitable for in fants and children up to the age of three are needed. General Drive chairman is Pa tricia Delsing. Margaret Cook is the Publicity chairman, and Dor othy Plambeck is Arrangements chairman. In true Christ-mass spirit, Kappa Mu Psi, the Music de partment club, will give a Christmas basket of toys, no tions, and goodies to a needy family. Chairman Moonyeen Brown and committee members Diane Hog- blom, Elizabeth Casieri, and Pa tricia Coakley will deliver this tra ditional gift during the holidays. The Chemistry club has named Patricia Munro chairman of its Christmas basket project. Underprivileged families will re ceive clothing, food, and toys from the Mathematics club and from the Art club. The French club is collecting canned food for two French followers of Charles de Foucauld. The Art club will give to a poor family gifts of clothing and food. Deck the Halls . . . Biologists Study Christmas Flora, Mistletoe, Pine Holly, mistletoe, helleborus viri- dis . . . a description of State street in December? No, it is the Biology club panel discussing the holiday flora, Dec. 12, at 4 p.m. in Room 607. The rare Christmas rose, the poinsettia, and other tropical greens on display will contrast with the more familiar pines, spruces, arbor vitae, and juniper. Assisting Chairman Marilyn Rice on the panel will be Marie Coyle and Alyce Mae Fiedler. The program on the holiday greens will begin with students of German singing Oh Tannenbaum. Mary Olson's solo, When Blos soms Flower 'Mid the Snows, will follow. Community singing of Deck The Halls will close the pro gram.
