Issue Vol. XXVI Mundelein College, Chicago 40, Illinois, Dec. 12, 1955 No. 6 Orchestra And Glee Club Music, Six Tableaux telling the Nativity story, the stir ring strains of the Hallelujah Chor us from Handel's Messiah these provide a prescription for the Christmas spirit. And they are offered to the stu dents and friends of the College who are invited to be guests at the annual Christmas Cantata, on Sun day, Dec. 18, at 8:15 p.m., in the theatre. The Orchestra, directed by Mr. Adalbert Huguelet, will open the program with the Christmas Overture by J. Coleridge Taylor, and the Glee club, with Orchestra ac companiment, will present a novelty arrangement of Christmas melodies by Moon yeen Brown with Joan Kies playing the marimba. Some of the Orchestra arrange ments are by Mary Ellen Casey, Mary Cecchin, and Eleanor Di- Maggio. The Glee club Treble Trio will offer Mozart's Christmas Lullaby, and the entire chorus will offer lx gt;, the Messiah, The Plains of Beth lehem, aiid finally uie Hallelujah Chorus. The Drama and Art departments contribute to the program tableaux of the Annunciation, the Nativity, the Shepherds, the Magi, the Mag nificat, and the Madonna and Child Enthroned. Glee club soloists will in clude Carole Ann Bauer, Mary Cecchin, Mary Ann Stepps, Madonna Toney, Pa tricia Coakley, Mary Skla vounos, Therese Zacker, Marilyn Zanke, and Joan Do herty. Organ accompanist will be Mary Ellen Casey. Virginia Leidinger, SAC president, will be the Madon na in the final tableau, with Laura Doyle, Loretta Lind, Nancy Schreiber, and Diane Barrett as angels. Others in the tableaux are Pa tricia Doherty, Mary Ann Car roll, Anne Carr, Mary Catherine Judae, Diane McDermott, Lucille (Continued on Page 4, Col. 5) Nova Scotia and Florida Are Faculty Destinations For Holiday Conventions Sister Mary Pierre, B.V.M., chair man of the Home Economics de partment, accompanied by Sister Mary Bernarda, chairman of the Spanish department and assistant to the President, will be in Hali fax for a week. As a delegate representing the National Catholic Council of Home Economics, Sister Mary Pierre will lecture for the NCCHE in the Ca nadian Maritime provinces. The meeting will be at Mt. St. Vincent college in Halifax, with representatives attending from var ious religious communities in the Halifax area. Blue Lights And Taper Flames Will Qlow on Formals at the Skyscraper Ball, Dec. 27. This highlight of Christmas vaca tion, sponsored by the SAC, will be in the Grand Ballroom of the Pal mer House. Starting at 9 p.m. Fred Morey and bis orchestra will pro vide the music. Bids will go on sale Wednesday, Dec. 14. i Committees, under the general chairmanship of Virginia Leidinger and Patricia Gavin, will be headed by SAC officers. Diane Sherwood and Rosemary Esposito will super vise bid sales. Arrangements will be handled by Joan Debrecht and Catherine Mc Manamon. Mary Drever is chair man of the Chaperon committee. Publicity will be taken care of by Ann Coe, Marilynn Ryan, Nancy Phee, Eileen McAvoy, Betty Weiss, and Annette Busse. The Aquatic Forum in Holly wood, Florida, will be the destina tion of Miss Audrey Sullivan, Phy sical Education director, and Miss Marilyn Neuhaus, Swimming in structor, Dec. 21. They will gather ideas for the annual water ballet. Press Workshop for High School Students is scheduled for Sunday, Jan. 8, from 12:45 until 5 p.m. Alumnae in Journalism and other speakers will describe careers open to lib eral arts educated women. Jour nalism students headed by Marie Kobielus, chairman, will serve on committees. Charity Becomes Visible As Clubs, Classes Gather toys, clothing, food, Christmas cards, and silver offerings for those in need. The Sodality is sponsoring two all-college projects. One is the send ing of Christmas cards to Cook County hospital patients, and the other is a mistletoe sale, proceeds to aid St. Augustine parish in Mus kogee, Oklahoma. Dorothy Souligny and Mary Aim Herald are co-chairmen of the Mis tletoe project. The Sodality also is preparing a basket for a needy family. The Freshman class is helping the missions with sil ver offerings and supplying gifts for the people at the Old People's Home. Senior and Junior Psychology majors are donating Christmas din ners and gifts to two families. Mari lyn Lindahl is chairman of the proj ect. Barbara Noell and Grace Shea are co-chairmen of the Chemistry club project a basket of food, clothing, dolls, and toys for a family. Kappa Mu Psi will send a com mittee composed of Eleanor di Mag- gio, Diane Hogblom, Elizabeth Ca sieri, and Mary Cecchin, chairman, to deliver its basket of food, cloth ing, and toys. Other groups sending baskets to families are Laetare Players, Soci ology club members, and the Ger man club. The Spanish club is de signating its basket for a Spanish- speaking family. A Nine'Story Cross Of Candlelight, Symbolic Of Mundelein9 s Welcome to the Christ Child, will shine from the south windows of the skyscraper building from 5 to 6 p.m., Dec. 20. Formed by 52 candles, the Cross will burn for one hour as a climax to the annual Caroling and Candlelighting pro gram, one of the most distinctive college traditions. O I U p I U P in the Christmas Cantata, Dec. 18, will be Betty Kelly, Gene McCarthy, Madonna Toney, and O Ml U 111 U joan Doherty, officers of the Glee club. Orchestra, Dr Drama, and Art students also will perform. Visible for many blocks down Sheridan Road, the Cross is a Fa culty-Student greeting to the city, heralding the beauty of the Chris- mastide. The student body and Fa culty members will assemble in the auditorium at 4:30 p.m., when the members of the Senior class and club and class presidents form a pro cession in the main corridor and enter carrying lighted ta pers. The Speech choir will recite the Nativity story from the Gospel of St. Luke, and the Glee club will sing Christmas songs, accompan ied by organists Jean Lindsay, Di ane Szardowski, Moonyeen Brown, Lynn Sharkey, Alice Jasio- nowski, and Annette Lubker. Following the Glee club selec tions, Virginia Leidinger, SAC president, will light the All-Col lege Candle on the stage, from a taper lighted at the Sanctuary Lamp in the Chapel. The officers will proceed to specified windows and light the candles to form the Cross. The students will remain in the audi torium, singing carols. On the return of the offi cers, Sister Mary John Mich ael, B.V.M., President of the College, will give the annual Christmas Message from the Faculty. Miss Leidinger and Catherine McManamon, Senior Class presi dent, will proceed to the main en trance of the skyscraper building to hang holly wreaths on the door. Sister Mary John Michael will light the Faculty candle, and Mar garet Mary Mitchell Langdon '40 will light the Alumnae candle. Miss Leidinger will light the SAC candle; Miss McManamon, the Senior class candle; Mary Dre ver, the Junior class candle; Nan cy Phee, the Sophomore class can dle; and Eileen McAvoy, the Freshman class candle. Helen Walsh will light the Sodality candle; Charlene Quinn will light one for the National Federation of Cath olic College Students; and Patricia Cannon will light one for the National Student asso ciation. Mary Frances Kunkel will light the Red Cross unit candle; and Rose Ann McGreal will light one for the Resident students. Patricia Doherty will light one for the Art club; Elizabeth Nash for the Biology club; Diane Ma lone for the Chemistry club; Faith Farley for the Debate club, and Frances Brennan for the Econom ics club. Joan Budicin will represent the French club; Dolores Dangelmaier the German club; Madonna Toney the Glee club. Therese Salvato will represent the Home Economics club; Ann Kobal the International Relations club, and Lucille Youngmann the Laetare Players. Beverly Battiste will light a candle for the Mathematics club; Mary Cecchin for the Music club; Ann Codd for the Orchestra club, and Marie Kobielus for the Press club. (Continued on Page 3, Col. 1)
