Carol Procession Begins at 5:15 p.m. The Cross of Candlelight, symbol of Mundelein's Christmas spirit, will shine this year in a world to which peace is more than a distant dream. Kindled at nightfall on Thursday, Dec. 20, it will shine as a tribute to the Prince of Peace Whose coming it heralds, and as a token of the faith and gratitude which mark America's first peacetime Christmas in four years. Following the ceremony of lighting the All-College Christmas candle, the seniors will entertain their mothers at a holiday supper in the tea-room. The juniors will have a class party in Room 405, and the sophomores and freshmen will have a joint social hour in the gymnasium. At 5:15, class and club officers will take tlicir places and light candles at designated windows on the south side of the skyscraper building. The seniors, wearing caps and gowns, will assemble on the eighth floor to take part in the caroling procession to the auditorium, where they will join with the other classes in singing traditional Christmas hymns. As the notes of the Adeste die away, Sister Mary Josephine, B.V.M., Presi dent of the College, will address the assembly, giving the annual Christmas Message from the Faculty. Faculty Member Talks On Paradise Lost Sister Mary Irma, B.V.M., chairman of the English department, discussed the Temptation of Eve in Paradise Lost be fore members of the English Section of the Catholic Language Teachers asso ciation of Chicago, on Nov. 25. Stressing the various sources which Milton used in his epic, Sister noted especially his debt to St. Bernard's analy sis of the seven modes of temptation. The meeting was held at De Paul uni versity. Departments Combine Talents In Christmas Program Qraduate of y36 Publishes Book For Children The Story of the Sandman may lure Mundelein students to the juvenile sec tion of the book departments, not be cause of a recurring interest in fairy tales, but because the narrative in the new illustrated book is by Caroline Holland Mallon '36. Inspiration for the story are Mrs. Mallon's two older children, Ann and Mickey, who meet the Sandman when they are en route to sleep, after they say their prayers. Illustrations in the book, which is pub lished by the Children's Publishing com pany, are by Mary Gehr. Mrs. Mallon, who is the wife of a graduate of the Loyola Law school, was Prom Queen in her junior year at Mun delein. A biology major, she wrote for Quest. Holiday spirit will come to the College on Dec. 16, when the Glee club, the Orchestra, the Drama, and the Art de partments combine their talents in the annual Christmas program, Under The Stars, for which the curtain will rise at 8 p.m., next Sunday evening. Directed by Joseph J. Grill, the Or chestra will open the entertainment with Erno Rapee's Christmas Bells, and, di rected by Adalbert Huguelet, the Glee club will follow with A group of tradi tional Christmas carols, with Mary As- sinios, Grace Komornicki, and Mary Jane Rowantree as soloists, and Man- La Londc playing a flute obbligato. Preluding the Cantata, The Coming of the Prince of Peace, which was written by June Murphy '45 for women's voices and orchestra, the Orchestra will play Prayer from Humperdinck's Hansel and Gretel and Pietro Yon's Gesu Bambino, arranged for orchestra by Maurice Baron. The opening chorus, entitled Arise, O Jerusalem, will have as soloist Mary Kaye Tentinger, and the accompanying tableau of The Prophets will include Jo Ann Logelin, Harriet Stewart, and Pa tricia Conley. The thunder of the prophecies will give way to the soft music of the An nunciation, with Louise Borrows and Dorothy Fellows singing solos and Jeanne O'Connor and Mary Jane Smith appear ing as the Virgin and the Angel. Eunice Dankowski will be soloist in The Magnificat, and Eleanor Layden will portray the Virgin in the tableau. Mar jorie Kroske, Diana Coffey, Louise Tan ner, Florence Sigler, and Dolores Duffy, will portray the shepherds in the fourth tableau, for which Bettye Mae Huber and Cynthia Knight will sing solos. The Christmas Cantata, for which Ma ry Louise Hector '45 wrote some of the lyrics, will continue with the singing of The Virgin's Lullaby, words for which were composed by Ivan J. McShane, a soldier in the South Pacific. Dellamae Laughlin will be soloist, and Sheila Fin ney and Margaret O'Leary will appear as The Madonna and St. Joseph, re spectively. To complete the Christmas scenes, the Coming of the Magi, with Lorraine Stajdohar as soloist, will be depicted in tableau by Nora Donati, Anita Schwaba, (Continued on page 4, column 5) Dean Is Appointed To Committee Sister Mary Bernarda, B.V.M., Dean, was appointed to the Membership Com mittee of the Illinois Association of Deans of Women, when the group met at the LaSalle hotel. Nov. 30 and Dec. 1. The meeting commemorated the twen ty-fifth anniversary of the founding of the association. Mundelein, Loyola Unite for Christmas Charity Project Collect Food, Clothing, Individual Qifts Mundelein and Loyola Sodality officers will spread Christmas cheer on Dec. 18 when they take baskets of food, clothing, and individual Christmas gifts to the 250 men and women at the Old People's Home conducted by the Little Sisters of the Poor. Many college clubs are contributing baskets to the school-wide charity project, for which Mary O'Malley and Martha Wade are co-chairmen, assisted by Mau reen and Josephine Roche, Mary O'Leary, Francine Lamb, and Dorothy Watters. In addition to the all-college project, several organizations are sponsoring spe cial Christmas events. The Home Eco nomics department will entertain 45 kindergarten children of Holy Family parish at a Christmas party on Dec. 21. Patricia and Peggy 0'Brien,Gloria Luxem, Ruth Lichtenwaiter, Norine Con don, and Norma Gaddini are planning the party, with Margaret McCromick, chairman. Collecting and dressing over 100 dolls for an orphan and foundling home is the Christmas project of the Secretarial department. The project is under the direction of Dolores Corcoran, Catherine Cashman, Anita Conley, Jean Irving, Catherine Fitzgibbon, Elaine Ortell, and Merry Angelos.
