Page Four THE SKYSCRAPER May 4,1966 ' u Jw aJa .-..'. : 1 News Briefs Lusk Judge: Nancy Nowik, who won the Lusk award for poetry in 1963, will judge the poetry entries in this year's Lusk creative writ ing contest, according to Mrs. David Spencer, Review moderator. Nancy was a Woodrow Wilson fellow and received her M.A. in English from Stanford and is currently teaching at the University of Santa Clara. Join Association: Mundelein officially joined the 19-member Associated Colleges of the Chicago Area last week, according to Dr. Norbert J. Hruby, vice president. The ACCA, of which the College has been an informal member since the fall of 1963, was formed to allow cooperative use of the facilities of Argonne National Laboratories. Ecumenical Move: In the spirit of Vatican II, the clerics of St. Viator have engaged Dr. Norbert J. Hruby to direct a study of their Ameri can problems. The Viatorian Fathers, numbering about 260 in the United States, will pattern their study closely after the Mundelein institutional analysis. Dr. George Schuster, who assisted Dr. Hruby in the College self-study, will serve on the Viatorian advisory com mittee. MSC Mixer: The Mundelein Student Congress will sponsor an all-school mixer May 13. Held in McCormick lounge, the dance will run from 9 to 12 p.m. General admission is 1; 50 cents for Mundelein stu dents with MSC cards. Presents Award: As chairman of the selection committee for the Out standing Professional Employee in the Chicago and metropolitan area, Sister Mary Ann Ida, B.V.M., will present the award May 12 at the Conrad Hilton Hotel. Exhibit Foreign Bibles Celebrating its 150th anniver sary, the American Bible Society has donated ten foreign language bibles to the College Library. Currently displayed on the main floor of the library, the bibles will be on exhibit throughout 1966. Then they will become a perma nent acquisition of the library. Contain Psalms The bibles, containing only the New Testament, are published in Chinese (Shangti), Arabic, Portu guese, Spanish, Russian, German, Japanese, Tshiluba, Navajo and Cebuan. The Russian and German versions also contain the psalms. Aid Missionaries Also on display are a chart of the English bible and leaflets de scribing the American Bible So ciety and its efforts. Founded in 1816, the society is a missionary or ganization supported by churches and individuals. Working with 65 denominations, it encourages wide circulation of the scriptures. The society also aids missionaries who are largely responsible for trans lating at least one book of the bible into more than 1,200 lan guages, to date. Colleges and universities throughout the nation have been given bibles in commemoration of the society's anniversary. St udcrapinad Say, it's actually true. There are only five more weeks, more or less exactly, until the first year of the 3-3 system passes into the dark pages of history. That's pretty exciting, about the only thing capable of exciting anyone. As a matter of fact, getting out is the main topic of conver sation. Escapists one and all. The hot competition for all the MSC offices certainly couldn't stir up any interest; it couldn't even stir up any candidates. There is always the cheerful service - with - a - smile attitude in Lewis Center to make lunch such an all-around pleasant meal. Too bad it doesn't exist. Another pressing problem weigh ing heavily on the minds of all is who (or what) to ask to the spring formal, June 4. No less acute is the fear that the dress for said affair will be duplicated once, twice or even (horror of horrors) three times. The major tragedies which plague a woman's life As all the films nominated for Academy Awards will come around to haunt the drive-ins, it is not too late to offer a few incisive observa tions on this year's results. There was definitely something for every one. For the music fanciers there is Sound of Music and for Russian and literature advocates, Dr. Zhi- vago. Then there is The Dot and the Line ( A Romance in Lower Mathematics ?) for the numbers 1 I lt; i s IP 3 03 c 3 4 -o 3 8 o 4 o i 5? Xw *- o M people. And then, there are those songs. And, then again, there is Julie Christie. And then. . . . For those speculating that the Skyscraper has sold out to the advertisers, rest assured. It hasn't happened yet, but it would be one sure way of beating the system. If the faculty roster for the student/faculty volleyball game is serious, it should be quite a game quite a game to bring a camera to. Can you believe Mrs. Matasar, Mrs. Spencer, Mr. Scheidler, Dr. Barta, Sister Mary Irene and Sis ter Mary Rose Cathlin all on the same team? Life has returned to Lewis Cen ter along with the new juke box. Perhaps the seniors on the first floor aren't so enthusiastic but their consolation is graduation. Is drab dark green paint cheaper or something that the locker rooms have to look like rejects from boot camp? A few pastel paints, bright- colored walls and some new lights could transform the dungeon into a decent study-locker area. Per haps, the senior class gift to the school... ? As a matter of fact, about half the lockers could be taken out any way as the residents need them about as much as they need an other meal card. It was quipped that the new sign out front, or wherever it's going to be, it's hard telling, ought to read: Mundelein College Just Like the Big Universities. Did anyone ever wonder: Why coffee costs 10 cents? Why there are five sticks in a pack of gum? Why there are 20 cigarettes in a pack? Why? Why? Why?
