- MERRY CHRISTMAS Ann Kielty Ann Zarlenga College Gets Share In Esso Fund Gift An unrestricted grant of 2,000 has been awarded to Mundelein College by the Esso Education Foundation, Sister Mary Ann Ida, president, has announced. Mundelein is one of 15 educational institutions in Illinois to share the 350 Esso grants totaling almost one and a half million dollars for 1958. All grants are given to privately-sup ported liberal arts and technical col leges and universities. Mundelein's grant will be divided between faculty salaries and proposed departmental projects. A similar Esso grant in 1957 helped to finance the language laboratory, the Related Arts club exhibits of modern prints, new science equipment and various smaller projects. This year's grants bring to five and HAPPY NEW YEAR Barbara O'Malley Kathleen Gottschalk Marilynne O'Dea Judy Erhardt Judy Bogan Queen Reigns at Skyscraper Ball; Eight Candidates Await Coronation A Skyscraper Queen will reign for the first time over a Skyscraper Ball Dee. 2C in the Furniture Club of America, 666 N. Lake Shore drive. Two candidates from each class were nominated Dec. 4, and one of the eight will be chosen Queen by the students attending the dance. Voting booths for the election of the queen will be set up in the bookstore lounge Wednesday and Thursday. Every student who has purchased her ticket to the Skyscraper Ball is en titled to one vote. THE SENIORS nominated tall blonde Ann Kielty and vivacious Marilyn O'Dea. Ann is an art major and active in the art club as social chairman. Her paintings have been shown in eighth floor art exhibits. Marilyn, a sociology major, is sen ior class president. Her name appears on the Dean's List, and she is a mem ber of the Sodality. One of the junior nominees is pe tite resident student, Colleen O'Brien. Colleen is also a sociology major and serves as secretary of the resident students. Judy Bogan is the other junior nominee. Auburn haired Judy is so- a half million dollars the total educa tional subsidies provided by the Esso Foundation which is supported by Standard Oil of New Jersey. Board of Leading Chicagoans Expands Influence of College A board of prominent Chicago businessmen has agreed to work with Sister Mary Ann Ida, B.V.M., in making the general public more aware of Mundelein and its many contributions to the com munity. Under the leadership of Ben Regan, president of Nationwide Food Service, Inc., members of the Board serve as an advisory council to Sister Mary Ann Ida and are taking positive steps to expand the College's sphere of influ ence among prominent Chicagoans and leaders of business and indus try. AT PRESENT 3? members make up the Board, but it is expected that membership will increase to 50 during the next few months. Although Mr. Regan is the husband of an alumna (Doris Burnett Regan '33), many of the other men had no previous con nection with Mundelein. To learn more of the College and its background, each Citizens' Board member has been the guest of the Col lege at a small, informal dinner. The Board held its first general meeting, Nov. 17 and plans to meet quarterly to hear discussions by faculty mem bers. SOPHOMORE CANDIDATE Kath leen Gottschalk, known for her acting ability, is a drama major and member of Laetare Players. She is also so cial chairman of her class and an honor student. Dark haired Ann Zarlenga was also nominated by the sophomores. A speech major, Ann is SAC representa tive from her class. She is a member of the Sodality and Vital Speakers. FRESHMEN nominated Governor Judy Erhardt and Barbara O'Malley. Barbara graduated from Aquinas high school where she was vice-president and president of the student council. Judy, a demure blonde, is an honor student, member of The Skyscraper Candlelight Cross Spreads Message Of Christ's Coming Candles shining in the south win dows of the college building will form a huge, nine-story cross to climax the Candlelighting Day ceremonies, Thursday, Dec. 18, in the auditorium. After the class holiday parties, fac ulty members, students, and guests will assemble in the auditorium for the program. The verse choir and the glee club will present the Christ mas Story from The Woman Wrapped in Silence. Class and club officers will carry lighted candles in procession to the stage where Vicki Bomba, SAC president, will light the all- college candle. Immediately afterwards, the offi cers will go to specified windows throughout the building. At a chime signal they will light the candles. Each candle will appear as part of the cross overlooking Sheridan rd. Sister Mary Ann Ida, the col lege president, will give the fac ulty's Christmas message to the student body. Miss Vicki Bomba and Marilynne O'Dea, senior class president, will hang the holly wreaths on the front door of the college. Christmas recess will then begin. NF Winter Council The National Federation of Catho lic College Students will hold a winter council meeting Dec. 28 to 31 in the Sheraton hotel. Regional presidents, vice-presidents and executive officers will make up the voting delegation. All interested students are invited to at tend the sessions. photo staff and an Immaculata gradu ate. The Ball will begin at 9 p.m. and continue until midnight with dancing to Del Rene's orchestra. BIDS WILL be on sale in the lounge for 4 until the beginning of Christ mas vacation. Renee Sluka is general chairman for the Ball. Other committee chair men include Kathleen McDermott, chaperone committee; Annette Busse, bid committee; Terri McManamon and Ann Zarlenga, queenship committee; Mary Frances Hoffman and Joan Mc- Cabe, publicity committee. The SAC sponsors the dance annually. Debaters Compete m In Illinois Tourney The junior varsity debate team at tending the 11th annual University of Illinois freshman-sophomore debate brought home a record of five out of eight wins and an award of Excellence. Representing the college were Frances Wolosewick and Mary Lou Lehman on the affirmative and Janet Shields and Yolandc Robbins on the negative debating the atomic test ban topic. Approximately 40 schools were en tered in the tourney. Colleen O'Brien Yuletide Festivities Planned by Classes The senior class will play hostess to their mothers just before Candlelight ing, Dec. 18, at the annual holiday party in the tearoom. The party will last from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. Mary Ellen Burg is general chair man of the activities. Assisting her are Jean Lindsay, in vitations; Ruth Charlton, arrange ments; Ann Kielty, refreshments; Sue Durburg, decorations; Joan Ayers, corsages; and Sandra Marek and Alice Bourke, entertainment. The other class parties will begin at 3 p.m. Room 405 is the scene of the junior festivities. The sophomore class will gather in Room 407, and the freshmen will hold their first college Christmas party in the gymnasium.
