Page Four THE SKYSCRAPER Nov. 2,1966 News Briefs Research Grant: Sister Mary Irma Corcoran, B.V.M., English depart ment, received a grant of 1,000 from the American Philosophical Society for Promoting Useful Knowledge, Philadelphia, Penn., to finance the completion of her research work in England for a biog raphy on Thomas Holme, first Surveyor General of Pennsylvania, and colleague of William Penn, founder of the Pennsylvania colony. This is Sister's second trip to England; the first was made possible by a grant from the American Association of University Women. Dean's Address: Sister Mary I. Griffin, B.V.M., academic dean, will speak Nov. 3 in Wayne, Penn. to a group of alumnae on the progress of Mundelein. On Nov. 4, the dean will be the principal speaker at the Seventh Annual Communion Dinner of the Naval Supply Depot Holy Name Society in Philadelphia. Sister will address an estimated 600 guests on the changing role of women in society. Senior Class Day: Senior Class Day will be held Nov. 16 at 4:30 p.m. in Lewis Center. This function is one part of a three-part program which is scheduled by the senior class; part two will consist of the comprehensive party; and part three will conclude the program with a gathering in the spring. Single reservations for Senior Class Day are 1.70; tickets for those who wish to invite a scholastic are 2.50. Anyone who wishes to donate their services or make any suggestions regarding entertainment may leave a note for Barbara Wright, co ordinator, in Box 13 N. Variety Show: This year's Freshman Variety Show will be held Nov. 8, at 3:10 p.m. in McCormick Lounge and is open to all students and faculty members. Described by Mollie McErlean, director of the show, as a musical-variety show, the program is going to be pre sented like the theater in the round. Working under freshman Therese Muelleman, assistant director, 17 freshman governors have organized some 175 freshmen into performers, writers and publicity agents. Physical Therapy Seminar: Anne McDermott and Jeanne Cinikas were the guests of Northwestern Reserve University in Cleveland Oct. 14 and 15, at a seminar on physical therapy, which was designed to acquaint college students with opportunities in the field. The semi nar included field trips to hospitals in the area, demonstrations in methods of physical therapy and discussion periods. Resident Transfer Party: A reception for resident transfer students will be held in McCormick Lounge, Nov. 3 at 7:30 p.m. Mary Jo Rudolf and Janet Schlosser, co-chairmen of the event, report that all resident moderators, Sister Ann Ida Gannon, president, Sister Mary I. Griffin, academic dean, Sister Mary A. Cramer, dean of students and Sister Mary Joan Frances Crowley, assistant dean for students in residence, are invited to the evening tea. In addition, the two head residents, Miss Jane Nepil and Miss Betty Prevendar, will also attend. Classics Club: A luncheon in the Walnut Room of Stouffer's Restaurant will provide the atmosphere for the fall meeting of the Chicago Classics Club. Sister Mary Donald McNeil, B.V.M., classics de partment chairman, and Sister Mary Kathleen O'Brien, B.V.M., philosophy and classics, will attend the Nov. 5 discussion. Mr. Edwin P. Menes will speak on Some Ancient Literature, Some Modern Criticism. Mr. Menes is an instructor of the classic lan guages at Loyola University. The club consists of high school and college teachers of the classics in the Chicago area and attracts to its meetings instructors from other states. Home Economics: Sister Mary Pierre, B.V.M., chairman of the home economics department and chairman of the Illinois College and Uni versity Administrators of Home Economics, will represent Munde lein at the group's conference, Nov. 3 in Springfield. Following this conference, Sister will remain in Springfield for the 45th Annual Conference of the Illinois Home Economics Association, Nov. 4 and 5. Keeping Ourselves Informed has been selected as the theme of this year's convention. Student Cartoon: By the light of the U.F.O., a cartoon by Mary Fran Campbell which appeared in the April 20, 1966 issue of the Sky scraper, was featured in the fall edition of The Collegiate Journalist with pictures chosen from student newspapers. To assist those who are still too caught up in the academic spirit of things, there are only 15 class days till Thanks giving, 23 days until Dec. 8 and 29 days until Christmas recess. Recess appears to be a most un fortunate choice of words for any thing as valued as a break-from- classes. It calls up memories of kindergarten when everyone went outside to play on the swings. Now people just swing in other ways.
