Father has traveled extensively in Russia, Greece, Egypt, Lebanon, Jordan, Israel and Turkey to meet the East ern Christian groups and to under stand their religious background. Father Maloney is now assigned to the Russian Center of Fordham University, N.Y., where he will teach Oriental Theology, and write about various problems dealing with Orthodox-Catholic relations. He received his doctorate in Orien tal Theology in June, 1962, from the Pontifical Oriental Institute. It is significant that the Mass in a rite other than the Roman and Father's lecture on reunion are scheduled for the eve of the Chair of Unity Octave. Beginning Jan. 18, the Feast of St. Peter's Chair in Rome, the eight days until the Jan. 25 feast of St. Paul's Conversion are days of prayer for Christian unity. College Welcomes Visiting Students For Open House High school students will parti cipate in the College Day Program, designed to give them an idea of a day's routine at Mundelein. Modern art work of Mundelein stu dents will be exhibited under the direction of Sister Blanche Marie, B.V.M. The seniors will sponsor two style shows at noon; the juniors are in charge of information; the sophomores will provide name tags, and the freshmen will act as gen eral hostesses. The Matchmaker, complete with imaginary people and explod ing tomato cans, will spin its web of delightful humor across the Mundelein footlights Feb. 10 and 11 at 7:30 p.m. Presented by the Laetare Play ers, the Thornton Wilder comedy is the second major production of the school year. Tickets will go on sale in the lounge Jan. 21. They will also be available at the box office before the performances. Cupid Gets Involved The plot revolves around Mrs. Dolly Gallagher Levi (Sylvia Stad- therr, Sandra Mills), 19th century New York's answer to Cupid. Sister Mary Ann Ida, B.V.M., Mundelein College president, is at tending the National Conference on Religion and Race held at the Edge- water Beach Hotel from Jan. 14 to 17. Two Mundelein sophomores, Pamela Payne and Ann Foxen are also at the conference as official observer delegates. This conference, the first of its kind in American history was con vened by the leaders of America's three major religious groups, the National Council of Churches, the National Catholic Welfare Confer ence and the Synagogue Council of America. Commemorating the cen tennial of the Emancipation Proc lamation, the conference proposes to bring the joint moral force of re ligion to bear on the problem of ra cial injustice. Albert Cardinal Meyer, Arch bishop of Chicago; Dr. Martin Lu ther King Jr., president of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference; and Abraham J. Hes- sel, professor of ethics and Jewish mysticism, Jewish Theological Se minary of America are scheduled to give the major addresses. Other speakers include Dr. Franklin H. Lettel, Chicago Theo logical Seminary; Rabbi Julius Mark, president of the Synagogue Council of America; and J. Irwin Miller, president of the National Council of Churches. Sixty different national denomi nations and groups sent 700-800 official delegates who are discuss ing the ways in which religion can give greater leadership in the solu tion of society's most crucial prob lem. The chairman of the event, Dr. Benjamin E. Mays sees this unique meeting as an opportunity for lay and religious leaders to take a clear and hard look at their responsibili ties for advancing the goals of a segregationless, prejudice-free so ciety. To enable the leaders and the lay people to resolve together and clean their own houses and to stand together in speaking on an important moral issue are two other objectives of this conference. Four forums are being held on the topics of: The Inner Life of the Church and Synagogue, The Responsibility of Church and Syna gogue as Institutions in the Com munity, The Role of Church and Synagogue in a Racially Changing Community, and The Relation of Church and Synagogue to Other Community Forces. Performers registered their acts Jan. 8 and auditioned Jan. 9 in the College Theater. Acts were re stricted only by time limits, three minutes for solos, five minutes for groups, and seven minutes for class acts which must have a minimum of ten members. Although the unifying theme of this year's production to be pre sented March 15 and 16 is Chicago, performers will not be rigidly re stricted to this theme. Marianne Littau, producer of Chi-Boom, ex plains that it serves only to coor dinate the program. We feel that with originality on the part of all of us, everything will fit in, Marianne asserts. Choice of the acts which will ap pear in the '63 Variety Show was made by director Mary Penkala '60, assistant director Pat Principe, producer Marianne Littau, SAC president Mildred Coffaro, and the four class presidents, Rosemary Harrington, senior; Pat'.i Tighe, junior; Ann Foxen, sophomore; and Nancy Wiaduck, freshman. CURRENTLY j EXHIBITING in 1 Gallery Eight, 1 Mrs. Juliet Rago, wife of Henry Rago, editor of Poetry maga zine, discusses her painting with Mr. Kenneth Izzi, art instructor, and Betty Arciaga. Mrs. Rago ex plains that her abstract paintings stem from her re actions to nature. The exhibit closes Jan. 28. reational, Musical and Burial So ciety. Mr. Vandergelder accepts Mrs. Levi's services because find ing a wife is more efficient, more adventurous, and cheaper than hir ing a housekeeper. Mrs. Irene Malloy, Mr. Vander- gelder's intended will be por trayed by Patricia Principe and Thais Alexander. Mrs. Malloy is a pretty, proper and prosperous New York milliner who hates hats. Bubbling over with innocent an tics are Cornelius Hackl (Bill Finn) and Barnaby Tucker (Bill Bullock), fellow-employees in Van- dergelder'S store. Introducing an element of young romance into the play are Ermen- garde (Rosaria Colletti, Mary Jane Farley), Mr. Vandergelder's prim and pretty niece, and Ambrose Kemper (Tom Bartholemew), her suitor. Comics Assist Adding their comic weight to help tip the scales toward hilarity are Minnie Fay, (Priscilla Soriano, Lynne Bjorklund) who lends her not-too-bright assistance in Mrs. Malloy's hat shop, Malachi Stack (Paul Stadtherr), who addresses Mr. Vandergelder as your honor, and the Cook (Judy Addis). Joseph Tornatorr will depict both Joe, the barber and Rudolph, the waiter. Mary Duda and Irene Scesnewicz will alternate in the roles of Ger trude, Mr. Vandergelder's dear but deaf servant, and Flora Van Huy- sen, a sighful spinster. Ernestina Simple, a character in a class by herself, exists only in Dolly Levi's imagination. Crew Aids Production Sister Mary Jeanelle, B.V.M., chairman of the drama department, will act as crew coordinator. Penny Anderson and Ann Foxen, costume managers, will keep the bustles and bowlers in order. Mae Muscarello, stage manager, Irene Scesnewicz, co-manager, and Eileen Teasdale, prop manager, will literally set the stage for the performances. Other women behind the scenes are Mrs. Lawrence McCarthy, who is direct ing the play, and Priscilla Soriano, her assistant director.
