Ah Whai a hopeless Conceit our paltry strivings for accuracy are. Don't you know, you smug journalists, that the Universe lies to our senses and our senses lie to us? You mean, breathed the Assemblage, throttled by a sudden Chill. Yes, said N.E., There is no News. No news one can trust. All news is a sham. Are we to interpret this as your resignation? cried out the entire Editorial Board, staggered. I long ago resigned myself. The Truth cannot be unearthed at will and report ed. It cannot be Beat. It comes only to those who wait. There is nothing so demoral izing to the efficiency of a newspaper as to have one's News Editor embrace the In tuitive Mode. Nonetheless, su perstition and Old Time's Sake compelled the staff to leave her booth unmolested, an oa sis of the Occult taking up valuable typewriter space, and work around her. But she dis rupted a succession of Press Nites with her disconcerting Presence, and her relentless undertone of muttered prov erbs like Oh, you scampering pursuers of the Picayune: What is all your zeal to be Up to the Minute, and On Time, in the face of The Timeless? So they moved her out into the hall, where she prophesied for seniors at 50c a hand. She thus evolved a variant of Palmistry called the School Line School. Examining the School Line (formerly called the Wealth Line, but as N. E. Emeritus herself explained, this Generation is not Materi alistic) she could predict the extent and course of one's Formal Education. Hmm, she would say, perusing the palm of a potential graduate. This break in the line indi cates a failure to complete your Phys. Ed. Requirement. I see a Debacle in your fu- ture. or; This squiggle means that you will dissipate in Grad School and lose your Danforth. or This straggling end here means that you will become a Ph.D. candidate, but (alas ) will never complete your dissertation. Never? the stricken girl would quaver. Never. N.E.E. would in sist, her voice clanking with Finality. Needless to say. she soon drove the Newspaper out of business. That's Poetic Justice for you . . .
