Theology chairman elected liturgical subcommittee head Sister Carol Frances Jegen, theology department chair man, was recently elected chairman of the subcommittee on liturgical adaptation estab lished under the Bishops' Li turgical Committee of the Na tional Conference of Catholic Bishops. Sister Carol Frances, the only sister on the subcom mittee, replaces outgoing chairman Father Charles Riepe, of the Baltimore Litur gical Commission. The fifteen member subcom mittee, organized in April 1967, consists of priests, laymen and women highly competent in li turgical matters. It includes such well-known theologians and liturgists as Fathers God frey Diekmann, Aidan Kava- naugh, Bernard Cooke; Robert Rambusch, Barry Ulanov, Mary Perkins Ryan and Vir ginia Sloyan. We serve as an advisory board to the bishops, Sister Carol Frances explained. We study proposals for experimen tation submitted nationally and make recommendations in regard to them . . . Anything being developed around the country goes to us before it gets to the bishops. The sub committee also manes Its own experimentation propos als, highlighting areas needing development. Sister's qualifications for her work include a doctorate in theology, membership on the Chicago Liturgical Commis- geles' Cardinal James Mcln- tyre. The committee, headed by Archbishop James V. Casey, Denver, invited a representa tive group of religious women to discuss the dispute between the California prelate and the IHM's. The other members of the Committee of Bishops are: Bishop Thomas A. Donnellan, Ogdensburg, N.Y; Auxiliary Bishop Joseph Breitenbeck, Detroit; and Father Thomas R. Gallagher, O.P., apostolic visitor to the IHM's in the dis pute. GAMES '68 WE DON'T NECESSARILY GOTTA PLAY THE POOR THING: The other day the Skyscraper feature editor, accompanied by several Mundelein RFK ad vocates and a McCarthyite Rookie photographer who went along for the Experience, went to Gary, Ind., understanding they were to escort Robert Kennedy back to Chicago. They waited two hours in the partially paved cornfield that is Gary Airport. As the throng of Greeters, Indiana school children and housewives grew, the embattled Mundelein con tingent stationed themselves at the only gate to the air strip, through which they shrewedly surmised the Sena tor would have to step. The Rookie, instructed to bring back a picture of Munde lein Girls with the senator, found a good vantage point and painstakingly completed five of the seven steps re quired to trigger the delicate mechanism of the antiquated Skyscraper camera (this being a directive for any would-be benefactors of College Journal ism out there.) After several false alarms occasioned by incoming Glid ers, the crowd, lulled by their Mental Set conviction that nothing bigger ever lands in Gary Airport, did not immedi ately grasp the implications of an American Airlines' jet landing there. When they did, they massed to the gate. The Mundelein girls perfected the formation of their flying Wedge and prepared to lunge, while the R. P. focused on the doorjamb. Someone, a veteran of air port receptions, asked her if she had Blue Cross. There was a sudden glimpse of The Sandy Hair and Piercing Blue Eyes, and the mob pounced. The cowed photographer, un mindful of duty, dashed for cover muttering stay serene with Gene. What was amazing about this quite commonplace scene of American Politics (and I here violate the Point of View of the above narrative) was the facile way in which the worshipful throng were able to project their own footsore weariness upon the candidate, thus vindicating, nay, transfig uring their selfpity. Oh, the poor thing, many said, remarking on Kennedy's haggard aspect (more than not an asset to his charisma) he must be tired, traveling all over the country like this. I wouldn't like to be in his shoes; and they stamped their feet, asleep from the long wait. 2-4-6-8, WHAJIMPLrES 'AJ FASCIST STATE: What were the motives of the Chicago newspapers in mis representing the intent of last Saturday's Mobilization March and rationalizing calculated and gratuitous police harass ment of the Marchers? The press overestimated the size of the Loyalty day Counter march, underestimated the size of the Loyalty day Coun termarch, underestimated the number of Peace Marchers, and represented the latter as chiefly composed of nippies and other Reprobates. One marcher who was picked up and thrown into a civic center pool by policemen was said by the Tribune to have jumped into the pool and defiantly and steadfastly refused to come out.
