Pianist Wins Symphony Audition Will Be Guest Artist At Grant Park Concert Selected in a series of musical auditions sponsored by the Chicago Park District. Muriel Meinken. senior piano major, will be guest artist playing with the Grant Park Symphony at their concert un Wednesday, July 3. John Meinken, the young artist's grandfather, is remembered as one of Chicago's leading bandmasters at the turn of the century. Her father, Charles F. Meinken, at whose suggestion she en tered the Park District competitions, is a violinist with the WLS studio en semble, and has been a member of the Chicago Opera and Chicago Symphony orchestras. As she prepares for this highpoint in the musical career she began under her aunt's tutelage when she was five. Miss Meinken remembers her first re cital 13 years ago. Only seven . . . and not yet tall enough to roach the pedals of a piano . . . she ascended to the stage of the Lyon and I leafy auditorium with unshakable con fidence. Four years after Miss Meinken's first public appearance, she presented an in dividual recital. The same year, she won first prize in a raelio contest. At 13, the young musician gave her second individual recital. For her third and final audition. Miss Meinken played Tschaikowsky's power ful Piano Concerto in li-flat Minor, mastered during her freshman and sop homore years at Mundelein. Ultimately. Miss Meinken plans to (Continued on page 7, column 3) Senior Places hi Essay Contest Senior Mary Beecher, drama major and stall member of The Skyscraper, won third place in an I-am-aii-Americaii-Day Essay contest conducted by the Chicago llerulil-.hiiericaii last week. The essay, for which Miss Beecher received two books on American history, is reprinted on Page 2. through the cour tesy of the Chicago Herald-American. First and second places in the contest were taken by immigrants. 124 Candidates Will Receive Degrees from His Eminence, Cardinal Stritch, on June 3 Largest Class Will Be Qracluated At Fifteenth Annual Commencement His Eminence, Samuel Cardinal Stritch, D.D., Archbishop of Chicago and Chancellor of the College, will confer degrees upon the 124 members of the Class of lu40, and will give the Address at the fifteenth annual Commencement exercises on Monday, June 3, at ID a.m. His Eminence will award the Munde lein College Gold Key, given for scholar ship, to 11 members oi the class, live of whom are candidates fur degrees Magna Cum Laude and six of whom are candidates for degrees Cum Laude. The College Orchestra, conducted by October Institute Will Study Charter Of United Nations To promote student interest in the United Nations organization, and to en courage interest in it on the part of other Chicaguans, the College will sponsor, in October, a five-day In stitute for the Study of the United Nations Charter. Purpose of the general sessions and of the seminars will be to encourage the participants to take an active part in determining what support they can give to the- work of the United Nations and to understand and evaluate ethically the problems presented to the UN. His Eminence, Samuel Cardinal Stritch, D.D., Archbishop of Chicago, Chancellor of the College, and chair man of the Bishop's Committee on the Pope's Peace Points, will lie honorary chairman of the Institute.
