Special Student Alumnae Issue Vol. XXX Mundelein College, Chicago 40, Illinois, November 25, 1959 Director John Ford To Speak During Motion Picture Festival A National Conference on Motion Picture Education will be presented at Mundelein on Nov. 27 and 28 by the Adult Education Centers of Chicago. JOHN FORD, director of The In former, Father William Lynch, S.J., author of The Image Industries, and Philip Scharper, drama critic of The Critic, will speak on The Art of Film Directing, Theology and Human Sensibility and The Contri bution of the Motion Picture Critic to American Culture respectively. Sister Mary St. Irene, head of the language department, will speak on The Foreign Film and Its Contribu tion to American Culture, and Don ald Costello of Today magazine will present The American Western as an Art Form. Films to be shown during the conference will include Shane, The Informer and La Strada, as well as movie shorts and ex perimental and children's films. Workshops to be conducted at 4 p.m. Loyola Students See Mundelein's Facilities During Open House Mundelein College officially spread its welcome mat to Loyola university on Nov. 23 and 24 when the Student Activities Council sponsored an open house for the neighboring school. The Social Arrangements Board, division of the SAC, organized and publicized the two-day program which lasted from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. each day. We want Loyola students to feel welcome here and to know that they have an unlimited invi tation to make use of many of Mundelein's facilities said Kath leen Rosenmeer, general chairman. Members of the SAB, under the di rection of June Gardula and Sheila Rooney, co-chairmen of the hostess committee, extended a warm welcome to the visting students, pointed out to them Mundelein's numerous educa tional facilities, and informed them about social functions at the college. In addition, students, under the watchful eye of Terry Duster, chair man, set up an information booth in the lounge in order to satisfy the queries of the curious collegiates. Saturday are: Foreign Films in Lan guage Courses, The Film in Litera ture Courses, Securing Films, High School Movie Clubs and How to Look at a Motion Picture. THIS CONFERENCE is being pre- John Ford sented as a positive approach to mo tion pictures and as a hope that cen ters may be set up where groups may obtain information on films, such as plot, structure, and artistic value. It will be directed mainly at teachers and professional people, but students may attend by sending 5 registration to the Adult Education Center, 21 W. Superior St. Artists Sell Paintings A Starving Artist Exhibit will be presented by the Art club from Nov. 30 to Dec. 4, in the lounge area. All members of the Art club may exhibit and sell their work. The Christmas season has been chosen for the exhibit so that buyers may purchase these original water- colors, prints and other works for their homes and friends. Christmas shop pers may contact the exhibitor by leaving a request on the locker number given below the work. The many sketches, wood block prints and paintings included in the exhibit will show the student body what is being produced by Mundelein artists. The play was presented by the Laetare Players in the College theater on Nov. 15. Holy Hour Dec. 3 Will Honor Mary In Advent Season The role that Mary plays in Advent will be the theme of the Immaculate Conception Holy Hour to be held Thursday, Dec. 3, at 1:10 in the col lege auditorium. THROUGH THIS holy hour, the Mundelein Sodality celebrates its pri mary titular feast, honoring Our Lady under her title of the Immacu late Conception. The primary title of every Sodality is one of the mysteries or titles of the Blessed Virgin. The holy hour will include the spe cial Act of Consecration of the United States to Mary Immaculate, composed for the Dedication of our National Shrine on Nov. 20. Also included in the holy hour will be the singing of hymns and the recitation of the Rosary with each class leading a different dec ade. A short meditation before each mystery will be given by Barbara Pierce, Sodality Prefect. The sermon will be delivered by the Rev. William Clark, who will also offi ciate at Benediction. Concluding the holy hour will be the blessing of the Advent Wreath; Advent will have be gun on the previous Sunday, Nov. 29. STUDENTS WILL dress in aca demic cap and gown for the holy hour and will have an opportunity to make a special promise to Mary for her feast. On Tuesday, Dec. 7, the Vigil of the Immaculate Conception, pledge cards will be available at the door of the College Chapel. These may be filled out and placed before Our Lady's altar. Sister Mary Josephine, Late President Buried Sister Mary Josephine, B.V.M., Fourth President of Mundelein Col lege and Councillor General for the Caecilians Present Concert Nov. 25 in College Theater The annual Fall Concert will be presented by the Mundelein College Caecilians on Nov. 25 at 3:10 in the College Theatre. All are invited to attend the concert which represents the combined work of the Music de partment members. The College Glee club, under the direction of Adalbert Huguelet, will present the rhythm revival version of Swing Low, Sweet Chariot and a French folk song Salangadou. They will also sing the sacred song Glory to God in the Highest. The Glee club will be acompanied by Parreannie Wil son. Two Beethoven sonatas for piano will be played by Patricia Prindiville, and Loretta Cahill. Kathleen Huhman will play Two Roumanian Dances by Bartok, and Katherine Jackson will play Debussy's Engulfed Cathedral. Jagged Peaks in the Starlight by Clokey, will be presented on the organ by Irene Straub. Sonata in E Mi nor, by Felix Borowski will be played by organist Gloria Koop. Yvonne Gahagan will sing Chacun le Sait, from LaFille du regiment by Donizetti, accompanied by Fran ces Tripplet. Dick Carlton s Band Plays For Sophomore Cotillion Dick Carlton's band will provide mu sic for Mundelein's Sophomore Cotil lion, Friday, Nov. 27, from 9-11 p.m. in the Constitution room of the Mor rison hotel, Barbara Ingo, general chairman, and Ann Wenthe, assistant chairman, have announced the crowning of a princess who will reign over the dance. The crowning will take place at 11 o'clock after Ann Schneider, president of the Sophomore class, has picked from a hat the name of the princess chosen B.V.M. Dies; at Mount Carmel Sisters of Charity of the Blessed Vir gin Mary, died at Mt. Carmel, Du buque, la., the Motherhouse of her Congregation on Friday, Nov. 13. TWENTY MEMBERS of the college faculty attended the funeral services held in Dubuque the following Mon day. Peggy Roach, alumnae secre tary and SAC president during Sister Mary Josephine's term of office, also attended, representing the Mundelein alumnae. Sister's death, following an illness of several months, marked the end of a long educational and administrative career. Since 1935 she has served successively as Dean of Clarke col lege, Provincial Superior, President of Mundelein College and Provincial Di- rectoress of Schools. In 1955 she was elected to the General Council, an administra tive group assisting the Superior Sixty Students M Seniors Take Top Five straight-A students top the Dean's List of 60 honor students who obtained a minimum grade point aver age of 2.5 for the first quarter. RATING STRAIGHT A's are Eliza beth Hackett, Marcella McCann and Jean Peterson, seniors; Evelyn Brown, junior and Sister M. Augustine, O.S.B., sophomore. At this time last quarter 70 stu dents merited honors, six of them maintaining straight A's. SENIORS LEAD the school this fall with 11 per cent of the class receiving from all the sophomores present. The winner will receive in honor of her crowning a princess doll as a reminder of her big moment as reigning cotillion princess. A white suede bid engraved in gold with the Mundelein crest and the words Sophomore Cotillion will be presented to each girl at the door. Tickets for the dance, which are 4, will be on sale in the lounge area, across from the elevators, until Wed nesday, Nov. 25. They may also be purchased at the door upon entering the dance. Day of Prayer Planned Sodalists ad candidates will attend a day of recollection on Tuesday, Dec. 8, at Holy Family Church, Roosevelt Road and May Street, from 1:30 to 4:15. THIS IS the first of the monthly days of recollection which have been planned this year by Rev. B. J. Mul- hern, S.J., regional sodality director. The day will be divided into regular periods devoted to talks, silence, and mental prayer. A 25 cent contribu tion, to be placed in the collection box at the rear of the church, will be asked of every person attending. General in the government of the entire Congregation. Sister Mary Josephine was named president of Mundelein in 1945. Dur ing her six-year term of office Mun delein's enrollment soared to a post war all-time high of 1,290 students.
