Both are from Rio de Janiero. Two Seniors Win European Jaunts Mundelein students chant Bon Voy age to Seniors Mary Nikias and Dor othy Hertl who have won NSA-spon- sored tours to Europe. Miss Nikias and Miss Hertl were chosen by the Foreign travel board of NSA, because of their outstanding work in this organization. They have been assigned to the Shipboard Technical staff. Miss Nikias, an active member of NSA for three years, is vice- president of the Illinois regional office and has worked in the tra vel office, entertaining foreign stu dents. She will be group leader of economics and political study- In her group are 25 students, 14 men and 11 girls, to study in England, France, Switzerland, Germany, Holland, and Yugoslavia. These students will be guests of economic and political in stitutions in these six countries. Miss Nikias will leave the group in Switzer land and spend 10 days visiting in Greece and Italy. Miss Hertl, travel director for NSA tours during the current aca demic year, has previously been in Europe three times. Miss Hertl is free to tour Europe on her own. Miss Nikias and Miss Hertl will sail June 20 on the S. S. Waterman, Hol land American lines, and return Sept. 14. Spring Issue Of Review Will Appear In May Spring, logically enough, is the theme of the Spring issue of the Review, to appear early in May. An analysis of the elusive season by Lucille Hamilton sets the mood, while poems by Joyce Gutzeit and Miss Hamilton are in the spirit of the theme. Carol Seguin, illus trates Miss Hamilton's story. Rosemary Regan contributes a feature story, illustrated by Doris Kuhlman The lead essay is a study of Thomas Mer ton and his works, made by Mary Ann Wenzel and illustrated by JoAnn Picola. As the occasion for her essay, Miss Wen zel answers the attack on Merton by a contributor to the Atlantic monthly. in addition, the Review will carry an essay by Mary Schweitzer, comparing modern ballads with the courtly love tradition. Marylahan Dawes shares her reaction to Anapurna, while Mary Jeanne Carey reviews the Cardboard Giants. Following her interest in the theater, Miss Regan reviews Edwin Booth, Prince of Players. Stephanie Jackson discusses Desiree; Miss Hamilton reviews Signs and, Wonders; Miss Schweitzer considers Always the Young Strangers and Florence ence Clarke reviews Mary Magdalene. German Club Party Carries Farewell Theme Auf Wiedershehen, till we meet again, might well be the theme of the combined Spring and Farewell party sponsored by Die Rothensteiner Gesellschaft. The Spring party will be held from 3 to 5 p.m. on Friday, May 8. Members of the Entertainment com mittee include Charlene Quinn, Patricia Gloster, Frances Brennan, Marilyn Ryan, Colette Trzcinski, Dorothy Lehman, Faith Farley, Nancy May, Lorraine De Bartolo, Primetta Marcheschi, and Helen Mally. Club members assisting on the Refresh ment committee are Diane Barrett, Dolores Wagner, Sylvia Behland, Diane Malone, Noreen Galvin, Sonja Semiki- nowski, Grace Pertell, Dorothy Mae O'Brien, Marilyn Baer, Therese Reilly, Nancy May, Frances Brennan, Elizabeth Nash, and Franceen Campbell. Others are Helen Mally, Miss Gloster, Nancy Grace, Eleanor Keane, Miss Far ley, Marilyn Ryan, Jean Sieja, Helen Butzen, Miss Marcheski, Marilyn Smith, Dorothy Lehman, and Anne Lange. Rehabilitation will be in the hands of Miss Baer, Miss Ryan, Miss Sieja, Ar lene Cobb, and Joan Debrecht. Seniors Entertain Incoming Freshmen Starting early to welcome next year's freshmen are four seniors who have entertained incoming freshmen at tea. Anna Mae McDonnell had as co- hostesses Joan Gamble, Audrey Bruch, Virginia Hayes, Kathleen McLean, and Marie Bornhofen. Marjorie Duffy was assisted at her tea by Mary Mahoney, Clare Hillyard, Pat ricia Quinn, and Mary Hartigan. Marilyn Tangney yesterday entertained a group of in-coming freshmen, with co- hostesses Marion Whelan, Nancy Gib bons, Barbara Brennan, Jeri McGrath, Catherine McManamon, and Mary Ann Lashmet. Another Sunday hostess was Sybil Lillie, whose co-hostesses were Mary Nikias, Dolores Sullivan, Carol Edwards, Dorothy Hertl, Florence Clarke, and Va silia Soutsos. Marcella Volini Meyer ex '48, who has a doctor of medicine degree from Loyola, will address the Freshmen, Thursday, on Marriage. Mrs. Meyer is the sister of Senior Yolanda Volini. Economics Classes Give Panel Series Freshmen economics students are giving a series of panel discussions on cur rent political and economic problems. On April 29, Virginia Gray, Eileen Ven- za, Geraldine Gross, Mary Lou Ryan, and Therese Salvato discussed the Farm Price Support Issue. In another class on the same day, Mary Shaughnessy, Margaret Sherly, Anna Leah Manas, and Patricia Stella considered the same topic. Milda Gulbinskas, Dorothy Bennett, Merry Kay Willett, and Barbara Camp- 'bell will present an economic compari son of Communism, Socialism, and Capitalism on May 6. The same topic will be discussed by Rosemary Ryan, Mary Buckley, Patricia Frankovic, Regina Rauchas, Audrey Her bert, and Bernadette Venopal in another class on the same day. Freshmen discussed possible fields of major interest with heads of the depart ments and seniors on April 14. The freshmen had an opportunity to discuss offerings in different fields with two departments. Faculty Attend Meetings, Write Literary Reviews Sister Mary Virgina, B.V.M,. of the English department, contributes to a re cent issue of The New World a review of a newly discovered work by G. K. Ches terton, a drama entitled The Surprise. Sister Mary Carmelyn, B.V.M., of the Art department, who moderates the cam pus chapter of the American National Red Cross, has been appointed Accident Prevention chairman for the Chicago chapter, and served as one of the judges in a poster contest for elementary school children. Sister Mary Pierre, of the Home Economics department, and Sister Mary Carmelyn attended the Red Cross Srping Conference at Northwestern university. Sister Mary Carmelia, B.V.M., chair man of the Drama department, Sister Mary Leola, Sister Mary Jeanelle, and Catherine Denny Phelps, A.M., also of the Drama department, and Sister Mar- tine, of the Speech department, attended the Central States Speech association con ference at the Sherman hotel recently. Sister Mary Harrita, B.V.M., moder ator of the International Relations club, and Sister Mary Liguori, chairman of the Sociology department, attended the ninth annual Tri-Regional Commission of Inter- American action meeting at the Univer sity of Notre Dame last week-end. Sk NFCCS Commission Plans New Year The Mariology commission of NFCCS will meet Sunday, May 16, at Lewis Towers to discuss plans for next year and introduce new representatives. Mary Cay Hannon, Sodality prefect, and her successor will attend as Mun delein commission members. Resident Record Session Includes Operatic Arias The resident students recently enjoyed their first classical record session. Der Rosencavalier was heard in its entirety, with occasional commentaries by Martha Meyer, Junior resident, who provided the opera album. Cokes and an informal discussion followed the program. Just to be contemporary, here's a look at student social life from a London-press-agent point of view. Attending the Spring Carnival, the crowning event of the season at the University of Illinois, were Peggy Gran dy, Sally Maguire, Mary Ann Kelly, Catherine Madden, Sylvia Behland, Dorothy Schneider, Lolita Kostanski, and Nancy Lee. Joan Overholt also recently visited the University. College week-ends are a royally pop ular pastime. Barbara Hoffman, Pa tricia Cassidy, and Connie Colletti will be guests at the St. Joseph college Senior Prom in Rensselaer. Norma Dugan, Jean Tennes, Alice Dixon, Loretta Neff, Joanne MacKin non, Barbara Kauth, and Frances O' Donnell went to Notre Dame for the Senior Prom. Attending the Junior Prom at Notre Dame were Marilyn Lin- dall and Nancy Oliver. Dancing at the Loyola Freshman- Sophomore party were Luci Ann Blume, Primetta Marcheschi, Jeannine Croar- kin, and Zoe von Hazmburg. Vivian Carroll, Collette Trenski, and Eileen Ward attended the Frat club dance at Loyola. Nancy Westphal recently spent a week-end at Colgate university. Dancing at Northwestern's Sophomore Cotillion were Mary Ann Piskosz, and Mary Frances Chambliss. Drury Lane has nothing over the Chicago stage, when one notes the number of recent theatre-going stu dents. Lu Ann McCarthy viewed a perfor mance of Dial M For Murder, while Mrs. McThing atracted Winifred Owens and Anita Williams. Kathleen Doogan, Charlotte Kwasigroch, Mary Beth Hemmer, and Mary Therese O' Connell saw The Male Animal. Patricia Quinn watched the recent production of Turn of the Key at the Loyola Com munity theatre. Heeding the steps of Jose Greco were Virginia Leidinger, Barbara Aiani, Mary Ann Krzysik, Mary Ellen Casey, Mary Jane Keating, and Norita Dreyer. A regal evening at the Pump Room delighted Bernadette Filipski and Mary Jane Brady. Glittering with the brilliance of the crown jewels is Arlene Gorgol's new gem recently received from Paul See. Another engagee is Mary Lou Cochran, whose fiance is Bob Zonka. Donna Fox, Patricia O'Shea, Sheila Woods, and Margaret Shannon were queenly guests at a Phi Beta Kappa fraternity party. Loyola Pi Alpha Pledge party goers were Bernice Walsh, Veda Wood, and Margery Touhy. Ann Codd and Jean Kielty were at Delta Sigma's party. The Circus, attended by Susan An derson and Loretta Soule, may not have been of the Piccadilly variety, but proved an evening of fun. Jeanne Leahy and Virginia Hayes were treated like visiting royalty in Wilmctte during a recent stay with Patricia Hill. The Armory was the scene of a Horse Show attended by riding enthusiasts Mary Nikias and Sybil Lillie. Phyl lis Garrity rode in the show. of the annual Home Economics symposium fashions, scheduled for showing on May 18, are modeled by dress designers Therese Salvato, Joyce Carpenter, Ellie Assim, and Elvera Lemm. Dinner Is Served For Economics Club Dinner will be at 6 p.m., May 6, for members of the Economics club. Marilyn Tangney, social chairman of the club, is arranging for dinner at Hans Good rich's restaurant. Students who were not initiated at the Christmas Tea will be initiated following the dinner. Members of the Finance class are go ing to a stockholders meeting. Standard Oil of Whiting, Indiana, will hold its annual meeting at 11 a.m., May 7. Members of the class who will par ticipate are June Vietzen, Cathryn Snell, Marilyn Tangney, Shirley Geiser, Betty Berres, Joanne Honey, and Mary Fran ces Kelly.
