Page Two - The SKYSCRAPER - March 1, 1968 Editorial Sounding Board It would be argument for a week, laughter for a month, and a good jest for ever. I disagree, the students will have adapted whatever mean ing the horse implies. If the students want a work of art that expresses the spirit of Mundelein, then why don't they cre ate that work of art, in spired by the spirit that already exists? Why not let the art arise but of Mundelein and the girls who are Mundelein? Or ls it that the women here have lost their first call, the call to creation? Or is it that the students want their spirit to be horsey? The Iron Horse may be a valid, good, work of art, but a rather flat expres sion of Mundelein's spirit. It will be a sad day In deed when the horse re flects the spirit of Munde lein, when, possibly, a more magnificent work of art can arise from the spirit of Mundelein. I guess there has to be spir it before it can give rise to art. James Ciletti, English department The MSC asked Kappa Mu Psi to help with their Clydesdale bandwagon in order to name John Kear ny's snorting sculpture. We protest double-barrel- ledly in this fashion: 1) The horse has a name. To re-name him would seem insulting to the artist. What if Rembrandt Von Rihj's Girl in the Half Opened Door was re named Hello Louise or Come In If You're Beau tiful. 2) A name is a sa cred sign that signifies a possession of an identifi cation between the cre- ator and the cre ated (Genesis I) It is more or less obvious that we did not create the sculpture and we have not received the permission of the creator to re-name the sculpture. Though we would like to contribute to the purchas ing of the horse, we would not like to project our identity onto it. Virginia Dooley Kappa Mu Psi Paint Time Upon observing the re cent student enthusiasm over such a worthy cause as our aesthetic develop ment, we would like to bring to the notice of the student body the un-aes- t h e 11 c environment in which we, the students of the Northland, are nur tured. Investigation concern - ing this matter found that the last occasion, the time and money was found to clean or paint the North land stairwell was the summer of 1966. Although students have volunteered to do this favor, their re quest was turned down. Is it true that the admin istration does not want the assistance of the stu dents in this project? Can we plead that this be the first Northland project, for does not aesthetic ap preciation being in the home ? Jan Griski Kay Fee Pat Hehir Paper Power Party The decision to abolish the Paper Power Party was not an unanimous de cision of the Skyscraper staff. Except for three of fices, all of the MSC posi- tions are uncontested; which in effect makes the MSC a volunteer organ ization. We maintain that this is a farcical election. In the spirit of the farce, we felt students should be presented with a farcical alternative: abolish the student government. If elected, the PPP officers would have immediately resigned. Though the problem of filling election slates Is a national college problem, we felt that the lack of student Interest in run ning for MSC positions perhaps was a sign that Mundelein students did not want the present form of student government or had outgrown the need for one. We hoped that the PPP would give the stu dent body an alternative no government. Kathleen Cummins Theresa Ebenhoe Kathleen Flynn Marianne Fusillo Sheila McCarthy Kathleen Riley Janet Sass Super Sleuth Could you please send a super sleuth to find out why the Mundelein Col lege library must bind its '67 magazines during the first few months of 1968? It is impossible to obtain information that is up-to- the-minute when these is- s u e s are out. Couldn't these issues be bound dur ing the summer when re search is not so frantic? Alice Johnson Fitting in Loyola One of the disadvan tages of attending a small college is the limited number and variety of courses offered during the school year. Mundelein has tried to solve this problem by establishing a program with Loyola Uni versity, which enables Mundelein students t o take courses at Loyola during the school year. Realistically, this is eas ier said than done. Since the two schools have different time slots, taking one course at Loy- o 1 a frequently cuts through two time slots at Mundelein. Also, Loyola's first semester ends and second semester begins during the winter term. Consequently, taking one course at Loyola can en tail using two time slots for two thirds of the aca demic year. Considering there are only six time slots in the academic day at Mundelein, this can be rather clostly. If the two schools could synchronize their time slots, perhaps this program could be more beneficial. Joanne Razumich Case a Carrell A progress report on the Learning Resource Center seems in order. Construction is progres sing nicely and we are displaying floor plans again so that all who are interested can match the scale drawing to the actu ality of steel aod con- crete. See the bulletin board on the first floor of the library. We are now working on the selection of furnish ings and to provide an op portunity for an expres- s i o n of opinion we have arranged to have a few carrels on loan for you to try out. We will ask stu dents and faculty to actu ally work in them and check a card which will be provided. Also, we will have a col lection of slides from vari ous libraries which will show interiors. Scheduled showings, which will pro vide an opportunity for discussion and expression of preference, will be posted. Watch the bulle tin board opposite the Col lege dining room and the Dean's Board for time and place for both events.
