A long-time benefactor of the College who had always refused any public acknowledgement of his gifts died early this month. He was Father Austin Gallagher, rector of St. Columbkille's church. In July, 1934, Father Gallagher made his first large gift to the College Library, to which he has donated frequently and generously since. Besides giving his own books, Father purchased others for the students' use, covering the fields of science, education, history, and American and English literature. In the spring of 1939, he presented a five-inch refracting telescope which had originally been built for the Harvard university observatory by the famous telescope maker, Alvin Clark. Anxious that Catholic education should benefit, Father Gallagher of fered this gift as well as financial means for construction of the observa tory on the eighth floor porch. He pre sided at the blessing of the telescope and the dedication of the observatory in 1941.
