These students will be cited at the com mencement ceremonies, June 11. Two hundred twenty-one stu dents will receive degrees at the 36th commencement exercises in the College Theater June 11 at 4 p.m. Eighteen students will graduate with honors and two honorary degrees will be awarded to Mrs. George Beadle and to Dr. George N. Shuster. Muriel Beadle will give the com mencement address and she will be awarded the degree of Honorary Doctor of Humane Letters for her work in the field of women's activi ties. Honor Shuster Dr. Shuster, vice-president of Notre Dame University, will also receive an Honorary Doctorate of Humane Letters for his work on the institutional analysis commit tee. Commencement will be preceded by Baccalaureate services at 1:15 p.m. Reverend John F. Rohrich, brother of Mary Rohrich, will cele brate Mass for the graduates and their guests in the College Theater. Reverend Joseph Kelly, S.J., chap lain, will give the homily. Bache lor hoods will be conferred before the Mass by Reverend Donald Hayes, S.J., Loyola. After Mass, graduates will be re- Convocation Hails Graduates Opening with the traditional pro cession of seniors and faculty in full academic dress, the annual spring honors convocation sched uled for June 7 at 2 p.m. in the Col lege Theater will carry two ma jor changes. Traditionally, seniors meriting departmental, scholastic and spe cial honors have received their awards on stage from the college president at each spring convoca tion. However, because of the in creased number of seniors winning awards, Sister Mary Ignatia, B.V.M., academic dean, has an nounced that students who have made the Dean's List or merited departmental honors will no longer receive ribbons on stage, although they will be cited during the pro gram by Sister Mary Ignatia. Ex plaining the rationale behind this alteration, Sister Mary Ignatia said, departmental honors are quite an academic achievement and we would like to acknowledge this fact publicly on the most signifi cant day for seniors. Recipients of departmental awards include: in biology, Diane Home and Sister Mary Rosamond Kurowski, C.S.S.F.; in English, Sister Mary Kevin Anderson, C.S.S.F., Elizabeth Busalacchi, Ma rian Delaney, Susan Petronella and Helen Pierson; in French, Joan Haas, Joan O'Connor and Diane Ca- pitani; in history, Alice Fetterman, Barbara Kaiser and Sheila O'Shea. Winners of home economics awards are Barbara Maguire and Mary Ann Wasilewski; in mathe matics, Mary Baker, Patricia Pel- licore, Patricia Quinn, Marcia Ueb bing, Patricia Wadecki and Kath leen Walsh; in music, Susan Dor mer; in Russian, Halina Kono packa and Christine Rydel; in Spanish and Portuguese, Patricia Webb. In sociology, Mary Reser, No reen Stoeck, Judith Abbott and Carol Stachyra. After the citation of scholastic and departmental award winners, Sister Mary Ann Ida, B.V.M., col lege president, assisted by MSC president Judith Ewing will pre sent honors to the winners of spe cial awards and to those elected to Kappa Gamma Pi. Recipient of the Janet McCar thy Fieweger home economics award is Pamela June Landers. The Ellen Collins Russian award re cipient has not been determined. Presented to the mothers of June graduates who are themselves Mundelein graduates, Mother- Daughter awards will be given to Margaret Madden Parent, mother of Margaret Ann Parent and to Mary Loughlin Masterson, mother of Maureen P. Masterson. The Mary Blake Finan award, conferred upon the outstanding senior in terms of character, co operation and service as deter mined by votes of the faculty and the senior class, will be presented to Judith Ewing. The annual Ann Lally award for (Continued on Page 7) Kappa Gamma Pi Inducts 12 Seniors Faculty and seniors elected 12 graduates to Kappa Gamma Pi, the national Catholic honor sorority. Eligibility for the society is based on a 2.6 scholastic average and the participation in school affairs. Joan O'Connor, a French major, was a member of the French Club for three years, and a participant in the Allerton House Conference in her junior year, representing student opinion at a conference of adminis trators and professors. Mundelein's top-ranking senior, Barbara Kaiser, has worked with the Glee Club, Cosmopolitan Club and last year was a delegate to the American Philosophical Association. Class treasurer in her sophomore year, Barbara Mundt, also was a member of the French and Chemistry Clubs and a candidate for Who's Who Among Students in American Universities and Colleges. Halina Konopacka, a Russian major, originally from Poland, worked in the Russian, Cosmopolitan, International Relations and Big Sisters Clubs. Jacqueline Goossens Leo belonged to the Speech Club, the dance club Orchesis and in junior year was vice president of the House Council. Math major Marcia Uebbing served as treasurer and secretary of the Math Club and was Big Sister. Barbara Maguire was active in Young Democrats and Alpha Omi- cron, the home economics club. In her junior year, she was also a Big Sister. A member of the Math Club for four years, Kathleen Walsh was also a member of the Equestriennes for two years. Margaret Malloy is a Big Sister and a member of the History Club. Patricia Wadecki, acting as treasurer of the Equestriennes last year and vice president this year, also belonged to the Math Club sophomore and junior years. Patricia Quinn was a member of Young Republicans and the Math Club. Sister Mary Ann Ida, B.V.M., college president, will cite Mrs. Beadle and Dr. Shuster for their honorary degrees. Muriel Beadle, whose husband is president of the University of Chi cago, received her Bachelor of Arts degree from Pomona College where she was elected to Phi Beta Kappa. She has worked as an advertising copywriter for Carson Pirie Scott and Co. and fashion editor, feature writer and women's editor for the Los Angeles Mirror News. The Saturday Evening Post pub lished her article, Are British Schools Better Than Ours? and a book, These Ruins Are Inhabited, was published in 1961. She has just published a second book, The Language of Life, with her hus band. Her special interests focus on public education and child wel fare. Dr. Shuster, vice-president of Notre Dame, was formerly presi dent of Hunter College for Women and also editor of Commonweal. He also served as the U.S. (Continued on Page 9)
