Clubs Join In Charity Projects Bring Qifts for Needy At Home and Abroad Alexander Pope once wrote: In faith and hope the world will disagree, But all mankind's concern is charity. Charity is a prime concern at Christ mas time for many of the college or ganizations- Laden with gifts, refreshments, cloth ing, and canned goods, the Spanish club will arrive at the Mexican settle ment, Conli-Marian, for the annual Christmas party tonight. After each child has received a gift, all will join in a Christmas program for the Mundelein students. Arrangements are under the direction of Patricia Scannell, Helen Manza, Marian Travaglini, and Charlene Anzalone. Alpha Omicron will give a party for the kindergarten children of Holy Family orphanage tomorrow. Dolls, cos tumed by members of the club, will be given to the girls, and the boys will re ceive toy trucks. Cookies and candy and mittens knitted by the club will also be distributed. Marjorie Neff, Betty Mc Donald, Elaine Muchair, and Loretta Spisak are in charge of the party. Underprivileged children and orphans are the object of the Economics club's charitable Christinas spirit. Under the direction of Patricia Smith and publicity chairmen Mary Jane Henry and Beth McGarry, over 100 dolls and toys will be collected and distributed to the child ren. Other committee members are Marie Downey, Rita Becker, Gay Pembroke, Joan Kennedy, Joan O'Connor, Joan Latz, Margaret Griffin, Helen Naminski, Shir ley Jacobs and Helen Goodall. The Brooklyn home of course, will be reestablished on the Mundelein stage, and the Drama students will stand in for the gentle heroines of Arsenic and Old Lace, in the second major production of the academic year. Take Stellar Roles Appearing as Abby in Joseph Kes- selring's famous play will be Patricia Bradley and Carolyn Kilkenny; Mil dred De Vic and Dolores Wojciechow ski will alternate in the role of Mar tha, and Gloria Guilfoyle and Joan Bridgman will alternate as Elaine. Students 'from Loyola university, Wright Junior college and the American Academy of Art will take male roles. Rosemary Thompson will serve as assistant to the director. George F. Petterson is technical direc tor, assisted by Barbara Schmitt and Mary Patricia Andersen. Members ol the Stage crew are Anne Murphy, Beta Kovac, Mary McNally, Stavroula Thomas, Charlotte Kwasi- groch, Catherine Ann Murphy, Mary Young, and Barbara Prohaska. Patricia Reese and Joan Bolger will assist chairman Simone Cliapius and Parqua D'Alessandro in the execution of wardrobe and make-up. Control Lighting Lights and shadows will be controlled by Peggy Shaughnessy and Jeannine St. Bernard, with Catherine Therese Murphy, assisting. Mary Lou Mugan and Patricia George head the Properties crew, which consists of Marilyn Hycnar, and Joan Hackett. Marie Marnan is house manager, and Elaine Antonucci and Jeannine Campbell are in charge of the box of fice. The College will close for the Christ mas holidays after the Candlelighting c remony on Dec. 20. and will reopen on Wednesday, Jan. 4. The Skyscraper extends to the Fac ulty, the students, and the friends of Mundelein cordial wishes for a joy ous Christmas and for a happy and blessed New Year. Senior Plans Promotion For OSP Drive Qoal is Fund For Aid of Foreign Students Regional publicity for the Overseas Service Program of NFCCS which in volves raising funds for European relief will be under the direction of senior Juanita Gilmore. Co-chairmen for the promotion of the drive are Marion Dwyer and Barbara Heintz. In much the same way that Mundelein in the 1948-49 drive raised 6,000 more than any other Catholic women's college in the country students will be given the opportunity to relieve the material and intellectual strife of European and Asiatic students. The regional schools, including Loyola, Barat, Mundelein, Rosary, St. Xavier's St. Francis, and De Paul, will Unite in a joint effort which netted 27,546 in last year's drive. Assisting with the Fund Drive on the Mundelein campus are juniors Katherine Brisch, Mary Carey, Joan Forbes, Claire Godsel, Emma Mar- ziillo, Catherine Ryan, and Peggy Swee ny; sophomores Barbara Daley, Marcella Farrell, Marion Gleason, Joan Goodwin, Joan Hurley, and Barbara Mann; and freshmen Donna Merwick and Gloria Kowalecki. Debaters Win Trophy, Ribbon: Await Notre Dame Challenge Two Mundelein teams returned in pos session of the second place trophy and an individual blue ribbon winner from the Knox College Invitational debate tournament at Galesburg, 111. Mary Ann Warner was elected as one of the 10 top-ranking debaters at the tourna ment last week-end. The loss of only one debate in 10 contests merited for Mundelein the only woman's college entered a sec ond place immediately behind Northwestern University and ahead oi Georgetown university. Representa tives to the tournament were Miss War ner, LaVon Froehlich, Carol Higgins, and Noreen Trapp. The University of Notre Dame, fresh from gridiron conquests, will converge on Mundelein in debating capacity at 3 p.m., Dec. 14, in Room 405. Mary Ann Warner Christmas Belles Ring In Annual Skyscraper Ball Snowflakes and starry eyes . . . Christmas and the Skyscraper . . . at Mundelein, they all go togeth er. The annual Ball will be held Dec. 28, in the Grand Ballroom of the Stevens Hotel, newly decora ted with turquoise and damask ta pestries. Dan Belloc's orchestra will provide the music. Dec. 18 Is Date For Yule Cantata, Under the Stars Art, Drama, Music Departments Cooperate The spirit of the Prince of Peace will kindle a spark of warm Christmas Spir it when the Glee club, the Orchestra, and the Drama and Art departments pre sent the traditional Christmas Cantata, Under the Stars. The program will be presented Sun day, Dec. 18, at 8:15 p.m. in the College auditorium. Play Sleigh Ride The Orchestra, under the baton of Jo seph J. Grill will play the opening selec tion, The Sleigh Ride, by Leroy Ander son, a musical picture of the horsedrawn sleigh, tinkling bells, and cracking whips, reminiscent of an old Courier and Ives print. The Glee club, under the direction of Adalbert Huguelet, will continue the program with the Shepherd's Christmas Song by Dickens, including a soprano solo ensemble, Elizabeth Adorjan, Joan George, and Marilyn Ziembicki; Carol of the Sheep Belle, a Slovak song by Richard Kountz; and Silent Night by Grober with descant by Eileen Heffer nan, Patricia Hill, and Winifred Well- mer. Vocal Ensemble Sings A vocal ensemble assisted by the Glee club will sing They Call Him Jesus. The ensemble will include Joyce John- son, Marie Casacdo, and Rosemary Donatelli, sopranos; and Marilyn Egan, Georgia Lambros, and Betty Wellner, altos. A medley of specially arranged Christmas music will be the next or chestral presentation. The Drama, Art, and Music depart ments collaborate to stage the Canta ta, The Coining of the Prince of Peace, which was composed by June Murphy, '45 for women's voices and orchestra. Joyce Knox will be soprano soloist in the opening chorus of the Cantata, Arise Oh Jerusalem. Depict Annunciation Soloists for the Annunciation will be Patricia Dee and Joan George. The tableau for this scene will include Patricia O'Shea, as the Virgin, and Madeline Roch, as the Angel. Maryanna Griglik will sing the Mag nificat, and Mary Ann Mollohan will portray the Virgin in the tableau. The next scene, The Plains of Bethle hem will have Carol Grant and Agnes Coco as soloists, while, in the tableau, Simone Cliapius, will portray the angel assisted by shepherds Evelyn King, Madonna Owens, and Ann Leach. Sings Virgin's Lullaby Trudy Anlauf, freshman, will sing the solo in The Virgin's Lullaby. In the Nativity tableau Mary Keilty will be seen as the Madonna and Rose mary Thompson as St. Joseph. The Coming of the Magi, will high light Marie Casaccio as soloist. Bern- adette Jacobs, Dolores Muelleman, and Ellen Anderson will impersonate the Three Kings in the tableau.
