Founded by George Washington in Newburgh, New York, in 1782, the Mili tary Decoration of the Purple Heart is the oldest organization of its kind in the United States, and one of the most distinguished. Conferred only upon those soldiers who displayed extraordinary courage or rendered uncommonly heroic ser vice, the Decoration, as Washington founded il. was purely honorary in character, and brought singular digni ty and prestige to the wearer of its insignia, a heart-shaped badge of pur ple silk. Honor List Lost The complete list of Washington's appointees, the first of whom is the hero of the play, has been lost, and. seemingly, was not extended after the Revolution. In 1932, however, 150 years after its foundation, the Decoration was revived by 26 World War veterans, and today, established as a Military Order, it num bers approximately 3000 members, in 47 states, with 141)0 chapters located in hading American cities. There is only one woman member of the organization, Miss Bree Kelly, head nurse at the Chicago Municipal Sanitarium, but there is a women's Auxiliary. This Auxiliary has charge of the Betsy Ross Headquarters in Philadelphia. National Headquarters of tie Order are in Chicago. Order Is Exclusive Regulations governing the awarding of the Purple Heart for acts or services performed prior to 1932 provide that it ma) lie given only to those persons who. as members of the Army, were awarded tl c Meritorious Services Ci tation Certificate by the Commander- in-Chief of ihe American Expedition ary Forces or who were wounded un der conditions which entitle them to wear a wound chevron. Since the reorganization of the Or der its officers have been interested in the presentation in dramatic form of the story of their military foundation. Last fall, the Reverend George T. Mc Carthy. National Chaplain of the Pur ple Heart and Rector of St. Margaret Mary parish, Chicago, recommended to National Commander T. M. Thomson of St. Paul that Mundelein College be commissioned to write and present the play. The performances on Tuesday and Thursday evenings will mark the fulfillment of that commission.
