Ghost as seen in the Hamlet of St. Stephens Chapel
date:
August 1820
description:
Scene in the House of Lords at the Queen's 'trial'. The throne sits against the end wall with two galleries. The Queen exclaims in terror with both arms raised at the sight of the first witness against her, Majocchi, and of the ghost of Princess Charlotte, who stands draped in white besides him, holding her infant with an arm extended towards the Queen. Besides the Queen on her extreme right are Brougham and Denman, her counsel, holding documents inscribed 'Defence of the Queen' and 'Queens Defence'. Both register astonished horror. The prosecuting consel are equally disturbed. A seated judge turns to them pointing to the Queen. There is a background of peers, all startled, while spectators watch from the galleries. In the center foreground is a large green bag on the floor from which clouds of smoke emerge. It has an unbuckled strap in the form of a Garter. Misquotes from Hamlet and Macbeth are printed throughout. Source: George.
