title:
Quacks from Church St: Dr Arther and his man Bob giving John Bull a Bolus
date:
April 1829
description:
John, larger in scale than his tormentors, lies on the ground supported by Peel, who kneels behind him, while Wellington, leaning forward on tiptoe, uses a thick rod with a cross-bar to ram down his mouth a large paper: 'Catholic Emancipation'. John, bottle-nosed and brandy-faced, wears an open waistcoat and shirt, with gaiters drawn above the knee. Peel, wearing oversleeves and apron, holds the patient's jaws with grim determination. Wellington, dressed like an old-fashioned doctor except for cavalry boots, rests his whole weight on the cross-bar of his rammer. Behind Peel on the extreme left and partly cut off by the margin is a large pestle and mortar inscribed 'Dose for 40s Free[holders]'. Dialogue is over the Wellington and John Bull figures.
