The awarding of certificates for membership in Who's Who among Students in American Universities and Colleges will also take place, followed by the distribution of Big Sister Pins. For the first time in Mundelein's (Continued on Page 6) Lewis 60,0000 Gifts Will Help Furnish Recreation Areas The Frank J. Lewis Charitable Trust has awarded Mundelein Col lege a 50,000 grant in reply to a request for financial assistance in furnishing the student recreation areas in the new building. The grant is in addition to a 10,000 check received from the same foun dation at Christmas time. The Lewis contribution is the largest gift ever received by the College, Sister Mary Ann Ida, B.V.M., College president, reports. By using it for furnishings in the recreation and lounge areas, all members of the student body will be able to share in it, she added. The grant was awarded by Julia Deal Lewis, president, and the Board of Directors of the Frank J. Lewis Charitable Trust. Mrs. Lewis, founder and president of the Illi nois Club for Catholic Women, is the widow of Frank J. Lewis who left most of his fortune to be used for charitable purposes, particu larly for extending the work of the Church in the Chicago area. Previous to his death he donated the buildings which now house Loy ola's Lewis Towers, DePaul's Downtown University Center and Lewis College in Lockport, 111. Record Class Receives Diplomas from Cardinal A record class of 248 students will graduate at commencement ex ercises in June and August. One hundred seventy-seven Mun delein College seniors will receive diplomas from His Eminence Al bert Cardinal Meyer at the 3 p.m. commencement exercises, June 5, in the College Theater. Graduation exercises will be held again in August for 71 sisters and lay students. Sister Mary Ignatia, B.V.M., dean of studies, will present the candidates for academic degrees followed by the citation of the can didate for an honorary degree by Sister Mary Ann Ida, B.V.M., presi dent. Meriting an honorary doctor of laws degree and delivering the com mencement address will be Ward L. Quaal, executive vice president of WGN-TV. The Very Reverend Monsignor John M. Kelly, editor of The New World and uncle of Jean and Joan Woods '62, will give the invocation. Fifteen students will graduate with honors. Mary Jule Murphy will merit a bachelor of science de gree summa cum laude. Magna cum laude graduates re ceiving a bachelor of arts degree are Pamela Beckman, Mary Ann Eiler, Geraldine Ptacek and Sister Mary Arthur, H.H.S. Awarded a B.S. degree magna cum laude will be Marguerite Swierk, Ann Marie Wenthe and Frances Wolosewick. Receiving B.A. degrees cum laude are Marie Dimucci, Mary Margaret Grady, Margaret Giuntini, Denise Lenzi, Suzanne F. Miller and Sister Mary Timothy, S.C.C. Also graduat ing cum laude with a bachelor of music degree is Carol Bellamy. On the morning of graduation, the graduates will be invested in Baccalaureate Hoods at 11 a.m. in the College Theater by Reverend John A. McEvoy, S.J., of Loyola University and the uncle of Kath leen Walsh '62. He will be assisted by Reverend William Clark, the ology instructor. Following inves titure the Class of '62 will recite the Pledge of Loyalty and Service. Baccalaureate Mass will then be offered by the Right Reverend Mon signor James V. Murphy, pastor of Immaculate Conception Parish, Highland Park, and uncle of gradu ate Mary Murphy '62. The seniors and their parents will be guests at a coffee hour in (Continued on Page 6) Co//ege Will Honor WGN's Ward Quaal Ward Quaal, executive vice president and general manager of WGN, Inc., will receive an honor ary doctor of laws degree and de liver the commencement address, June 5. In honoring Ward Quaal, Mun delein is once again recognizing the services and accomplishments of a man who is using his talents for the betterment of society and for the city of Chicago in particu- Name Eight to Kappa Gamma Pi Eight new members of Kappa Gamma Pi, the national Catholic scholastic honorary society for women, will be formally inducted into the society June 9 at the Mar shall Field State Street Store. Members are elected by a vote of the senior class and faculty. Kappa Gamma Pi, the Greek let ters signifying Catholic women leaders, admits members whose scholastic and leadership abilities warrant merit. Organized in 1928, the society has traditionally encouraged ac tivity in Church and secular af fairs. The outstanding campus leaders in the class of '62 elected to the society include four math majors, the president of resident students, a finalist for College Bowl, SAC social chairman and a Big Sister. PAMELA BECKMAN, Mary Margaret Grady, Mary Jule Mur phy and Frances Wolosewick, mathematics majors, participated in the honors seminar in their de partment. Pam was also a SNEA member. MARY MARGARET GRADY is a member of Who's Who and held the office of SAC treasurer. She has been offered a teaching fellow ship at Loyola. MARY JULE MURPHY, gradu ating Summa Cum Laude, was the chairman of the advanced section of the Math Tournament and a Big Sister. FRANCES WOLOSEWICK served as a Sodality Council officer and a member of the Debate Team and Delta Sigma Rho. JUDY McCANN, a transfer stu dent, was a charter member of the Clarke College Honor Students. Judy was one of the nine finalists for College Bowl. She majored in English. GERALDINE PTACEK, a speech correction major, was the social chairman, treasurer and president of the resident students as well as chairman of the hand book committee for Big Sisters. ANN MARIE WENTHE ma jored in chemistry and minored in biology. She reigned as the 1961 Chicago Catholic College Queen and this year as the College All- Star Queen. JOANN WOODS, a SNEA member and Big Sister, majored in English and minored in Spanish and education. Joanne served as chairman of the junior prom and has been hostess for various oe lt; sions. Ward Quaal lar, stated Sister Mary Ann Ida, B.V.M., College president. Mr. Quaal has been untiring in his efforts at WGN-TV to upgrade the quality of the programs pre sented. The nation-wide acclaim merited by some of the station's showing is proof of his success in this area, Sister continued. Quaal, a member of the Munde lein President's Council, is vice chairman of the Chicago Better Business Bureau and a member of the Board of Governors of the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences. Last Assembly Cites Seniors' Achievements Seniors outstanding in va rious facets of their college careers will be honored tomor row at the Honors Assembly in the College Theater. Formerly, students of all four classes who had merited awards were honored in May, but a change in recent years scheduled a second Honors Assembly in October. Awards for excellence in the previous academic year are given to un derclassmen at that time. After the processional composed by Richolson and the College Song, citation of awards will be an nounced by Sister Mary Ignatia, B.V.M., dean of studies. Sister Mary Ann Ida, B.V.M., Mundelein College president, will present the awards assisted by Mary Williams, SAC president and senior class president Helen Berg. Students who have attained the required 2.5 average in their major fields and a B+ in senior compre hensive exams will receive depart mental awards. Departmental honors have been merited by: Bernadette Piontek in (Continued on Page 6) Mundelein President Participates in Dialog Sister Mary Ann Ida, B.V.M., Mundelein College president, re cently was named to a planning committee for the College presi dents' workshop sponsored each year by the North Central Asso ciation. Last Sunday Sister spoke to the Newman Club of Northern State Illinois University on Modern Phi losophy in the Life of College Stu dents. This marked Sister's third address at the University in De- Kalb. The Place of the Layman in a Catholic College will provide the topic for the President as a panel member at the annual meeting of the American College Public Re lations Association, July 1-5, in White Sulphur Springs, Va. Sister Mary Ann Ida has also been invited to participate in a Dialog at Notre Dame University this fall, the second Protestant- Catholic discussion sponsored by the theology department of the university. Ten Protestants and ten Catho lics will informally discuss the Fa thers of the Church. Mundelein's president is the first Sister to be invited to such a dis cussion.
