THE TOWER To the seasoned critic, the Tower may be just another year-book, but to us who have taken part in its construction, it is a monument more enduring than brass. For we have learned much from this work: that towers are not built from the top down, nor do they hang in mid-air; that words are all too concrete, and have, sometimes, a numerical significance that cannot be overlooked. But more than this, we have learned and it is this we know will remain something of the craftsman's joy with which the medieval peasant did his small share in building a lofty cathedral. Our Tower is more than a ccmposite work of material skill; all the dreams and visions of the student body have somehow found their way into it, and students of every group have contributed to the structure. This year, under the leadership of Alary Lally, editor-in-chief, and Alarion Young, assistant editor, some innovations have been made. Since our faculty has grown not a little, their section has been enlarged, and brief comments accompany each picture. The senior class album is another feature of which we are very proud, for it may never happen again that an entire page can be devoted to each member of the graduating class. Student art work throughout the book is another new feature. The financial side of the Tower has been capably directed by Annamerle Kramer, who roused the school to an active interest in securing advertisements and patrons. In retrospect, we feel that each student will treasure this year-book as something which she herself helped to produce, another tangible evidence of that college spirit characteristic of Alundelein. THE SENIOR BALL COMMITTEE Standing Mary Emily Garvey, Helen O'Gara. Seated Vera Carson. SOCIAL LIFE All work and no play makes Jane a dull girl. Accordingly, our students have enlivened the school year with a series of social activities. An informal Hallowe'en party opened the year and served to break the social ice, enabling new students to become acquainted while those of last year renewed friendships. The gymnasium echoed to the lively music of the college orchestra while costumed figures banished all the alone-in-a-crowd feeling that freshmen sometimes have. The sophomores made their debut as hostesses at a cotillion given November 8 in the Gold Room of the Drake Hotel. It was an informal table dance, and merited much praise for the sophomore class in general and the cotillion committee in particular. The juniors came to the rescue of the student body, weary from study and examinations, when they gave their annual Prom in the main dining room of the Drake Hotel on Friday, April I. The formal Prom is one of the largest social events of the year, and because of its formality, one of the lovliest. Everyone was in a party mood that April evening, and the pastel shades of the gowns, together with the lovely decorations, were heralds of a joyous springtime. Last but not least was the Senior Ball, a grand finale to the social activities of the graduating class. Again the Drake was the scene of life and gaiety, and again the seniors, who had set a splendid precedent for future social activities when they gave our first Junior Prom last year, proved themselves charming hostesses and provided a brilliant climax for our social calendar.
