College Cites Students for Scholarship, Activity As a climax to their four years at Mundelein, 44 seniors will be pre sented awards by Sister Mary Ann Ida, B.V.M., college President, at the Honors Convocation to be held May 22 at 1:10 p.m. The awards represent outstanding achievements in general scholastic ability, in the students' major fields, or in special campus activities. This convocation will honor only seniors. Members of the other classes will receive recognition for their work at the Foundress Day- Program to be held in the fall of 1958. This separate recognition of undergraduates is for the purpose of stimulating students to greater effort early in tbe scholastic year. Highest recognition given will be to the 15 seniors voted to membership in Kappa Gam ma Pi, national scholastic hon or society. (See story below). Thirty seniors will receive De partmental Honors. These honors, in most departments, are awarded to students maintaining a general scholastic average of 2.0. a depart mental average of 2.5, and a com prehensive examination average of 2.5. In addition to these averages, seniors are expected to complete a specified departmental project ranging from a research paper to a recital or laboratory problem. Past Officers Elected To Hold New Posts As Junior Officers Kathleen Hotton will lead tbe Junior Class as president in 1958- 59 as a result of elections held last week. Miss Hotton serves as an SAC representative in freshman year. Assisting her as vice president will be Mary Dankowski. Bar bara Pierce and Kathleen Kilday were elected to the offices of sec retary and treasurer, respectively. Serving as SAC representatives for the coming year will be Kath leen McDermott and Terri Mc- Manamon. Judy Bogan, retiring from office as sophomore president, will be social chairman of her class for the coming year. Newly elected sergeant-at arms will be Frances Kotre. The Magnificat, intoned in antiphonal style by the Glee club, will then be answered by the stu dent body. For the recessional, the Glee Club will sing King of Creation. Air of Concealment Surrounds Luncheon Secret is the keyword for the Junior-Senior luncheon to be held at the Michigan Shores Country club in Wilmette, May 14, at 1 :00 p.m. Mum is the word because the menu is a surprise. Also carrying tbe cat in the bag are members of the entertainment committee, Mar guerite Phillips, Alice Bourke. and Barbara Guderian. Mary Ellen Burg, Glee Club president, will double as musical director. During the luncheon, speeches will be made by Betty Weiss, jun ior president, and Lynne Sheeran, senior president. Reward-an Award Ann Coe, SAC President, Recipient Of Annual Mary Blake Finan Award The Mary Blake Finan Award will be presented at the Honors Con vocation to Ann Coe, SAC president. This annual award is given to the senior, who, in the estimation of the faculty and senior class, has been outstanding in character, cooperation, and service during her four years at Mundelein. Miss Coe, during her term as SAC president, was general chair man of the Benefit committees last fall, and was chairman of the Aca demic Affairs committee, the Con- cert-Lecture arrangements com- T j 7 j j mittee, and the handbook revision. Sodality to Install New Officers May 21 Installation of officers far the Mundelein Sodality and for the newly organized Alumnae Sodality will be held in the Stella Maris chapel at 4:00, May 21. Father L. J. Evett, Sodality director, will officiate at the ceremony. Filling the office of prefect, Barbara Bukowski will take the oath of office along with first vice-prefect, Clare Walsh, second vice- prefect, Sandra Marek, secre tary, Mary Anne King, and treasurer, Geraldine Sofka. Newly elected members of the spiritual council, in addition to the above officers are juniors, Ruth Charlton, Eleanor Ferrina, and Ar lene McCarthy. This award was established by the late Mrs. Mary Blake Finan, 1950 Magnificat Medal Winner. Mrs. Finan, a Clarke College grad uate, spent her life assisting the poor and underprivileged of Chi cago by her work as probation of ficer in the Chicago criminal courts and as field representative for Mar- iliac House. Class of '59 Elects Senior Officers Marilyn O'Dea, past Vice-Presi dent of the Junior class, will be Senior Class President next year. New Vice-President is Florence Klein. Taking notes for the Class of '59 will be Secretary, Mary Ellen Burg. Mary Ann Manago will ac count for class funds as treasurer. Sergeant-at-arms will be Con stance Teipe. Janet Lynch was elected Social Chairman. Annette Busse and Betty Weiss will serve as SAC representatives. Skyscraper Scoop Experienced Reporters Co-Editors for 1958-59 Looking ahead to next year, the Skyscraper announces that Bar bara Guderian and Marguerite Phillips will be co-editors of the paper for the year 1958-59. Both junior English-Journalism majors, the girls have had three years of experience in writing for the Skyscraper. During the past year they have served as make-up editors. Barbara, treasurer of the Press Club and member of the Stylus club, has written and directed many of tbe scripts used for various func tions of her class, including the Junior Class Day skit and the Jun ior-Senior Luncheon program, for which she collaborated with Mar guerite. Marguerite, an active debater for the past three years, is present ly secretary of the Press club and a member of the Sodality Spiritual Council.
