Sharon Pellitier Mary Robinson Rose McKlernan Atmosphere poisons thought Apathy deflates radicals' bag skyscraper Vol. XXXIX Mundelein College, Chicago, HI., 60626, January 24,1969 111 No. 10 Skyscrapings Since every publication from Diabetes Anon ymous to Popular Mechanix has had its say on the Singles Bar, I felt it was time for experi ence to speak. Dear Abby has time and again advised against loveless women seeking com panionship at a Singles Bar. Abby gives the impression that when you open the door to one of these bars you are confronted with a purely sensual world with red neon signs of Men Women flashing all about you. At the Store North located at Howard and another street many women have found lasting companionship. Usually, lasting three hours. I jest though. I have actually been intro duced to a vibrant exciting world at the Store North. Never before would I have thought that within a radius of four city blocks from our campus live a 23 year old world renowned geologist, who delivers groceries for the Jewel off-season; plus four Chicago Bears, who look peaked and scrawny in season; and a comedy researcher for Rowan and Martin. These were only three of the impressives I've met there. All of them intended to call me but two got amnesia complicated by two broken legs (hi this case four broken legs). The other fell off the curb seriously injuring his dialing finger. After awhile you feel bad being just plain ol' Jane Smith so you decide that you'll shade the truth a little. The first time I attempted this I had Middle Class Jane Smith all over me. Nervous, and wishing to be done with the ordeal, I went to the first person I saw and said, Want to know who I am? He said no in only the way a hand run over blood shot eyes can say no. A belch pretty well affirmed his negative response. If circumstances are such that you don't immediately get caught up in the rousing game of conversational I-Doubt-You, you can always go over and play the Computer Game. It serves both to recall to the suicidal mind that there awaits a real world only beyond the beer belly of the bouncer. Also, some worm will want to test his brain on your quarter (the amount needed to play the Computer Game). This will at least result in a 45 minute conver sation over whether you find the nude pictures hanging here and there objectionable. The one hanging around his neck usually does come on a bit strong but the others you explain you really don't give a dilly about. Who wants to argue with a TV magnate from Cairo, anyway? One added note on this subject. Certain Christian axioms which have become integral to our lives, do not operate in the strange atmospheric condition of the Store North, which is about two parts alcohol to one part hot air. For this reason never work on the .principle that when women are Mary-like, men are Christ-like. Pozzo. by ELLEN ROUCEK In sophomore Rose McKiernan's small Winthrop apartment, there is a banner on the wall with the legend that is Rose's greeting: In revolution, one wins or dies. This is a succinct statement of the philosophy of the Students for a Democratic Society of which Rose is a member. I thought the way SDS did; I was always to the left. SDS espouses the sentiments that led to last spring's uprisings at New York's Columbia University, the paralyzing nation-wide strike of students and workers in France and participation in demonstrations during the August Democratic Convention. But what has all of this to do with a small, midwest, Christian women's college? Rose feels that it should have much to do with Mundelein. This school needs to be awakened to certain facts about this country and this war. radical viewpoint The activist explains that the purpose of SDS at Mundelein is to bring the student body to a more radical viewpoint. However, she is having a difficult time accomplishing her purpose. Although Rose finds a core of least 100 who will listen, she is unable to penetrate the apathy of the general student body. She cited an example: SDS completely opposes what it describes as the U.S. government's immoral, illegal, and genocidal war against the people of Vietnam. It sees the draft as racist and anti-democratic and demands abolition of the selective service system. In an attempt to present these opinions to Mundelein students, the national SDS last year sponsored a ten-day program against the war here. The program included poetry readings, a meal of reconciliation and speakers who discussed the draft, racism and the morality of the war. The response was nil. We can get co-operation from the administration and the faculty, but not from the students, Rose explains. They just don't care or want to know about contemporary political and social issues. Disillusioned with Mundelein students, Rose is concentrating on working with local SDS groups at the Universities of Chicago and Loyola. SDS stigma There is definite stigmatism on SDS at Mundelein, she adds. No one will listen to anything associated with SDS. If we want to do something on campus, we usually ask FSM to sponsor it. The Free Society Movement is a loosely-structured organiza tion of about ten or fifteen girls advocating some type of leftist or movement politics at Mundelein. Started this fall by sophomore Sharon Pelletier and junior Mary Rose Strubbe, it has no ties with any existing formal organizations. In their introductory leaflet, they discussed their purpose as to radicalize the thinking of the student body to make relevant racism, police brutality, the military industrial complex, the role of the multi-university, chemical and biological warfare, Marx, socialism, communism, revolution, reform, the war, imperialism, capitalism. FSM hopes to promote an open-mindedness about real issues, to promote a serious consideration of these issues on the basis of a sound reading and discussion program ... to point out the value of struggle between persons holding different views on the left, to demonstrate what a real democracy is. To accomplish these goals, FSM proposes a free class which has been successful on many American campuses. FSM suggested (Continued on page three)
